In Greek mythology, sirens used their songs to lure sailors close to rocky shores, where they would shipwreck. Traditionally, they were pictured as bird-like women with wings, but they are also commonly thought of as mermaids.

The Gorgons (you might know the most famous one, Medusa) are thought of as monsters, but originally they were protectors of Athena's temple who suffered a curse. The snakes in their hair and the ability to turn mortals into stone with just a look make them formidable opponents.

In Pakistan, India, and other Southeast Asian countries, the Churel is the spirit of a woman who died during childbirth. Some believe they're the spirits of women who died with unfulfilled desires, or died an unnatural or premature death. The Churel's true form is said to be disturbing, but they can shape-shift into beautiful young women in order to lure in young men and drain them of their youth, leaving them old and feeble. You can always spot a Churel by her feet, which will be turned backwards.

Tisiphone was one of three named Furies in Greek mythology, along with her sisters, Alecto and Megaera. Her job was to punish mortals who committed murder, though sometimes she was said to guard the gates of Tartarus in a blood-soaked dress.

The Sylph were conceptualized as air spirits, representing that element of nature in contrast to Gnomes (earth), Salamanders (fire), and Undines (water). As such, they can be difficult to spot and even harder to catch.

In Arabian cultures, the Si'la is a type of Jinn. Though they are shape-shifters, they often appear as female and mate with men to bridge the gap between spirits and mortals, acting as mediators between the two worlds.

In Slavic cultures, Baba Yaga often appears as an old woman to travelers in her forest. Depending on the person, Baba Yaga might help them or cause them trouble.

In Spanish mythology, the Aloja were spirits who could be found in secluded places with fresh water. They were often nonviolent, keeping to themselves or turning into blackbirds to escape encounters with mortals. But on occasion, if a mortal disturbed her waters uninvited, an Aloja would boil the water instantly, burning or killing the intruder.
