Last February, CW president Mark Pedowitz revealed that early discussions were being had about a potential Gossip Girl reboot.
It's a year later, and those discussions turned into a full-blown greenlit show for HBO Max! The Gossip Girl reboot is officially in the works, and it's found its first lead star: Emily Alyn Lind.
If you're wondering where you might've seen her face before, Emily has previously appeared in Code Black, Sacred Lies, Revenge, The Babysitter, and Doctor Sleep.
Emily is set to play Aubrey, a teen who's "been in a long-term relationship and is beginning to wonder what more could be out there," according to Deadline.
Although further details about Emily's character and the rest of the cast have not yet been released, the series is promising more diversity this time around.
This time around, some of the leads are non-white. There’s a lot of queer content on this show. It is very much dealing with the way the world looks now, where wealth and privilege come from, and how you handle that. The thing I can’t say is there is a twist, and that all relates to the twist.
Gossip Girl's original co-creators, Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage, will be behind the reboot as executive producers, as well as one of the original showrunners, Josh Safran.
Like its predecessor, the 10-episode reboot will be based on Cecily von Ziegesar's book series. The team has already received the first script. Here's what you can expect from the new premise:
Eight years after the original website went dark, a new generation of New York private school teens are introduced to the social surveillance of Gossip Girl. The prestige series will address just how much social media — and the landscape of New York itself — has changed in the intervening years.
And lastly, probably the most pressing question on every fan's mind: Which original cast members will be returning? Here's what we know so far:
• Kristen Bell will reprise her role as the show's narrator.
• Chace Crawford told EW he'd be excited to make a cameo or "play a dad," he added jokingly.
• Blake Lively told E! News that "she's not taking part in the series in any way, shape, or form."
• Leighton Meester told E! News she "doesn't know" if she'd return to the show, but she would watch it.
• Penn Badgley told Entertainment Tonight that he'd "love to contribute in a meaningful way" and that it "would depend on a lot of things."
The Gossip Girl reboot does not have an official release date yet. HBO Max is expected to launch in May, so we're keeping our fingers crossed for a spring debut.
