"In it, a film crew is following a serial killer, and they move from observers to participants. The film is relentlessly brutal, graphic, and upsetting with nothing held back. It crawls under your skin and stays there."
3. Jojo Rabbit (2019)

5. Hostel (2005)

"Just read the description on IMDb and you’ll understand why. I couldn’t even finish watching the movie."

"The shunting scene genuinely left me speechless. It may not be as dark as some other films listed, but it disturbed me. I didn't even know what I was seeing. What kind of sick mind thinks of these things?!"
8. American History X (1998)

"The scene of the curb...I could only watch that movie once, and even once was too much."
9. Climax (2018)

"I’ve seen so many disturbing movies in my life, but this one left me permanently unsettled. A group of dancers are drugged with acid while rehearsing in a remote area, driving them all to madness. The acts committed by some of the dancers are absolutely horrific. The second part of the movie is filmed in one 42-minute-long take, making the events feel so realistic. It made me feel like I had been drugged myself. It’s been two years since I’ve seen it, and I still think about it every day."
10. A Clockwork Orange (1971)

"It's been years since I've seen this, and I still hate it."
11. Oldboy (2003)

"The original is actually a really great film, but once you know what the twist is, it makes it impossible to watch again — especially during 'those' scenes!"
12. The Devil All the Time (2020)

"It wasn’t so much scary as it was disturbing. My hand was over my mouth in shock the entire time. I would recommend this — 10/10 — if you have a strong stomach."
13. There's Something Wrong With Aunt Diane (2011)

"It's an actual documentary that is so disturbing to watch, especially seeing how the family keeps defending her."

"I knew where it was going and didn’t want to see it, but I couldn’t stop watching. I still can’t think about it without getting a disgusted feeling."
15. Dogtooth (2009)

"It's so incredibly disturbing on about 39 different fronts...but I can’t even put my finger on what about it made me feel so unsettled. Still, I know that — as much as it lives rent-free in my brain, and as often as I bring it up in conversations about movies I'd like to unsee — there is something about it that I must love."
16. Happiness (1998)

"I was so fucking scarred for life when I saw it. Why was I curious about this film?!"
17. Antichrist (2009)

"I know a lot of films by Lars von Trier are messed up, but that was uncomfortable and just downright disgusting from start to finish. I did finish it (for some reason) and remember just thinking, Why did I put myself through that?!"
18. Mother (2017)

"Specifically, the baby scene. I was actually in such a panic, I was sweating and wanted to rip my own eyes out."
19. Se7en (1995)

"That was the last time I ever saw a movie just because of who the stars were..."
20. The Perfection (2018)
View this video on YouTube
"Good lord, THIS MOVIE. I don't even know what to say about it. There's a story about female empowerment and solidarity underneath all the messed up shit that happens, but you have to sit through a lot, and I mean A LOT, of really disturbing scenes to get there. Definitely peep the trailer before you decide to watch this one, and heed the trigger warnings — particularly regarding gore and sexual assault."
21. Deliverance (1972)

"I never made it through. I just stopped watching and wished I could unsee what little I'd already seen."
22. The Green Inferno (2015)

"It's a Korean horror zombie movie. Just...WHY did I watch that?! A lot of gore and just complete awfulness. The stuff of nightmares."
27. We Need to Talk About Kevin (2011)
View this video on YouTube
"I wish I never saw it. It’s really disturbing how Kevin is with his mother while totally content with everyone else. It’s so tragic at the end, when he can’t even remember why he committed these awful crimes. The cast is wonderful, and the film is actually done really well, but I needed some kind of resolution and never got it."
28. Battle Royale (2000)

"It’s basically what The Hunger Games were based on, but so violent. It’s a hard watch."
29. Midsommar (2019)
View this video on YouTube
"I couldn't sleep right for days after watching it, and it was all I could think about in the worst way possible. I hated it from start to finish and wish I never saw it. I understand that it was well made and some people loved it, but it fucked with my head."
30. Martyrs (2008)

"The original one, in French, was so disturbing and scary. I remember feeling terrified and sick while watching it. The flaying scene was too much for me to bear, yet I couldn’t look away. It stayed with me for a long time, and I’ll never be able to see it ever again."
31. Leaving Las Vegas (1995)
View this video on YouTube
"Not a traditionally 'disturbing' movie. It was excellent, but the depiction of acute alcoholism is just so disturbing to me. I appreciated the excellent performances, but seeing it once was more than enough."
32. Funny Games (1997)
View this video on YouTube
"The concept is so simple, and that made it even scarier for me! Basically, two strangers make their way into a family home while remaining hauntingly polite, yet aggressive and threatening, and insisting the family play their awful 'games.' I couldn’t handle that they break the fourth wall and talk to you, the viewer."
33. The ABCs of Death (2012)
View this video on YouTube
"It's an anthology film about the different ways you can die. Pick a letter from the 26 choices and pick your poison. Every scene is worse than the last. It will make you want to scrub the last two hours from your brain."
34. The Skin I Live In (2011)
View this video on YouTube
"When I put all the pieces together and made sense of what was really going on in the film, all I kept thinking was, Who the hell came up with the idea for this? I watched it a long time ago, and it still shocks me to this day that someone actually came up with that."
35. The Girl Next Door (2007)
View this video on YouTube
"It's based on a real story, so knowing that poor girl was tortured to death in real life just sickens me. I can stomach most fictional stories, but anything based on a real person's suffering makes me very uncomfortable."
36. I Spit on Your Grave (1978)

"I watch the worst of the 'worst' horror movies as a hobby. I actually got through Cannibal Holocaust and all three Human Centipede movies just fine. I can never rewatch this. I almost stopped watching multiple times because of how sick it made me."
37. Phenomena (1985)

"It was on a local cable access horror movie show, and my father insisted I watch it with him. It was so disgusting and upsetting that I ended up sleeping with the light on and pop music playing for weeks."
38. Holy Motors (2012)
View this video on YouTube
"I had to watch it for my cinematography class, and the entire movie was just so...vulgar. Just absolutely filthy and uncomfortable to watch, even though I watched it alone. I couldn’t even finish it. The theme of the movie was fine, sure, but the actual content..."
39. Nocturnal Animals (2016)

"There’s explicit sexual violence, murder, and depression. It’s a horrible ending, and I wish I had never seen it."
40. The Witch (2015)
View this video on YouTube
"It's very weird and very eerie. It’s based in colonial times and follows a family who are outcasts and are being tormented by the devil, who is possessing the family’s black goat. There’s a horrifying, gruesome scene involving crows that I will never be able to unsee. It’s something that I think about almost daily, and I won’t ever be able to look at a goat or a crow the same way ever again."
41. Re-Animator (1985)

"It's disturbing in a disgusting way. If I could remove one single memory, it would be the entirety of that film."
42. And finally — Audition (1999)
View this video on YouTube
"It was in the foreign film section at Blockbuster. The back of the box read like it was a psychological thriller. It was, in fact, a horror film. It (apparently) has a reputation as the scariest horror film that most people have never seen...and boy, is it. What’s worse is that even though it gets quite gruesome and terrifying, it’s nearly impossible to look away."
