Throw Out My Trash For Me And I'll Tell You How Responsible You Are

Hello and welcome to my dumpster.

Friend! (We're friends, right?) Thank you for visiting my home. I am sorry for the mess, now please help me clean it up.

Oh, also, my county* has some seriously strict recycling laws, and I cannot afford a fine (lol!), so please keep that in mind. Anyway, you're the best, I love and trust you <3

*Your county might do things a little differently, so always double check regarding your own policies! Recycling restrictions often depend on the capabilities of your local facility.

  1. Can of La Croix that's been sitting on my desk for weeks.

    Correct!
    Wrong!

    Recycle

Beverage cans get recycled into bikes, plane parts, and new cans.

  2. Used tissue I keep reusing because I forgot to buy Kleenex (sorry).

    Correct!
    Wrong!

    Garbage

No one wants to recycle snot. Soiled paper products should go in the garbage.

  3. Stack of The New Yorker magazines I will never read.

    Correct!
    Wrong!

    Recycle

Save the planet by recycling your old magazines. You don't even need to remove the staples, contrary to what your mom says.

  4. Coffee I bought and never drank so I could steal Wi-Fi from a cafe.

    Correct!
    Wrong!

    Garbage

What's very cool about these coffee cups is that they're coated in plastic so your drink doesn't, like, immediately wither the cup. But that also means you can't recycle them!

  5. Fancy bottle of whiskey I killed within two months.

    Correct!
    Wrong!

    Recycle

Scientists estimate that it would take a literal million years for glass to break down in nature. Recycle all your drank is what I'm saying.

  6. This gross pizza box I shame-shoved under my bed.

    Correct!
    Wrong!

    Garbage

Grease can contaminate the rest of the recycling, so the greasiest of boxes should typically go in the garbage. Minimally stained boxes can still be recycled. If you want to be a real hero, you can always separate the salvageable cardboard from the rest.

  7. This used diaper I'm afraid of. (How did it get here??)

    Correct!
    Wrong!

    Garbage

The EPA recommends flushing the baby waste first, then tossing the diaper.

  8. A bunch of these plates, since I obviously don't wash dishes.

    Alanthebox via Wikimedia Commons
    Correct!
    Wrong!

    Garbage

Like coffee cups, these plates are coated with plastic, which makes them hard to recycle. But there are recyclable paper-only plates out there. Double check to see which you have before tossing!

  9. The latex gloves you used to handle a stranger's trash.

    Correct!
    Wrong!

    Garbage

Latex gloves aren't recyclable, and neither are the noxious chemicals they've probably touched. (Not saying I made you touch noxious chemicals.)
