31 Races That Could Determine Control Of The House In 2019

All 435 seats in the House of Representatives are up for grabs this year. Here are the races you should know about:

1. California's 10th District: Rep. Jeff Denham (R) vs. Josh Harder (D)

Jeff Denham, a peanut farmer and Air Force veteran, is seeking re-election in a rural area partly known for farming. His challenger is his polar opposite, a venture-capitalist with no prior experience in politics. In 2012, Denham won by just three points, and the district heavily favored Hillary Clinton in the 2016 elections.

Current polls show that Harder up five points.

2. California's 22nd District: Rep. Devin Nunes (R) vs. Andrew Janz (D)

Incumbent Devin Nunes has recently gained attention for using his position as the Republican chair of the House Intelligence Committee, to defend President Trump from charges of collusion. Democratic challenger Andrew Janz, a former attorney, is hoping his focus on water infrastructure will win over farmers in the district, which has faced water shortages.

A recent poll shows Nunes leading by eight points, a comfortable lead but a more competitive race that Nunes is used to.

3. California's 25th District: Steve Knight (R) vs. Katie Hill (D)

District 25 has been represented by a Republican since 1993, but heavily favored Hillary Clinton in the last presidential election. Republican incumbent Steve Knight is seeking re-election for the second time. His Democratic challenger, Katie Hill, is the executive of a nonprofit and has the support of former president Barack Obama.

Latest polling shows Hill has a four point lead over Knight.

4. California's 39th District: Kim Young (R) vs. Edward Cisneros (D)

The 39th district's longtime Republican representative, Ed Royce, is stepping down. Royce aide Kim Young is running to fill his seat, but facing a challenge from Democrat Edward Cisneros. Both are relatively unknown to Californians in the district, which favored Clinton in the last presidential election, but also favored Republican Royce in its last midterm.

A recent poll shows that Cisneros has a slim lead over Young.

5. California's 45th District: Rep. Mimi Walters (R) vs. Katie Porter (D)

California's 45th district has been represented by Republicans since the '80s, with incumbent Mimi Walters in the seat since 2015. Democratic challenger Katie Porter is a lawyer who has written several books with Senator Elizabeth Warren. Healthcare is a big issue for this district and Walters voted to repeal the Affordable Care Act.

Latest polling finds Porter leading by seven points.

6. California's 48th District: Rep. Dana Rohrabacher (R) vs. Harley Rouda (D)

Republican Dana Rohrabacher has served this district since 2013, but his strong ties to Russia have not played well with his conservative-leaning electorate. His Democratic challenger, Harley Rouda, is a real estate mogul and former Republican himself.

Many polls have shown that this race is evenly tied.

7. Florida's 26th District: Rep. Carlos Curbelo (R) vs. Debbie Mucarsel-Powell (D)

Incumbent Carlos Curbelo is seeking his second term in Florda's 26th district. He is a Republican who has distanced himself from President Trump. His challenger, first-time nominee Debbie Mucarsel-Powell is an Ecuadorian immigrant who decided to run after Curbelo voted to repeal the Affordable Care Act.

The most recent poll puts Curbelo ahead by three points.

8. Florida's 27th District: Maria Elvira Salazar (R) vs. Donna Shalala (D)

With longtime Republican Congresswoman Ileana Ros-Lehtinen stepping down, Democrats hope to take control of this vacant seat. They're betting on former Secretary of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Donna Shalala, who has experience and name recognition. Her challenger, Republican Maria Elvira Salazar, is a broadcast journalist who once interviewed Fidel Castro and has billed herself as an expert on Latin American politics. Despite looking like an easy pick up for Democrats, Shalala has struggled to gain an edge in her campaign.

Polls show Salazar leading by just two points.

9. Iowa's 3rd District: Rep. David Young (R) vs. Cindy Axne (D)

Republican David Young is seeking re-election for his third term representing Iowa's third district. His opponent, first-time nominee Cindy Axne, worked in state politics and is running on health care and environmental issues.

While most polls have shown Axne with a slight lead, between one to four points, a poll conducted by Emerson saw Young leading by 16 points.

10. Illinois's 6th District: Rep. Peter Roskam (R) vs. Sean Casten (D)

Republican incumbent Peter Roskam has fallen in line with President Trump's agenda. Illinois's sixth district usually votes Republican, but voted for Hillary Clinton in the 2016 presidential elections. His challenger, Democrat Sean Casten is a scientist and clean energy businessman.

Polls have shown conflicting results, but the most recent one places Casten ahead of of Roskam by six points.

11. Illinois's 12th District: Rep. Mike Bost (R) vs. Brendan Kelly (D)

Illinois's 12th district used to be a Democratic stronghold, but supported President Trump in the 2016 election. Mike Bost is seeking re-election for his third term and has aligned himself with Trump's policies. His challenger, Brendan Kelly, is state attorney for St. Clair County.

Recent polls have shown that Bost has a shaky one point lead over his Democratic challenger.

12. Kansas's 2nd District: Steve Watkins (R) vs. Paul Davis (D)

With GOP representative Lynn Jenkins stepping down, first-time Republican nominee Steve Watkins will try to replace her. However, Democratic challenger Paul Davis is a more experienced and better-known name. He served as minority Speaker of the state House from 2009 to 2015 and ran for governor in 2014.

Polls have consistently put Davis ahead in this largely red district.

13. Kentucky's 6th District: Rep. Andy Barr (R) vs. Amy McGrath (D)

Republican incumbent Andy Barr is in a close race with Democratic first-timer Amy McGrath, whose stirring ad pulled in millions of dollars in campaign donations.

The most recent poll shows Barr leading by two points.

14. Maine's 2nd District: Rep. Bruce Poliquin (R) vs. Jared Golden (D)

Incumbent Bruce Poliquin is New England's only Republican House member. Maine's second district voted for President Trump in 2016, but voted for Barack Obama in the 2012 election. Democratic challenger Jared Golden, a Marine Corps veteran and representative in the Maine House, hopes to sway the district back to blue.

Latest polling shows Golden ahead by eight points, but previous polling had shown Poliquin leading by as much as seven points.

15. Michigan's 8th District: Rep. Mike Bishop (R) vs. Elissa Slotkin (D)

Republican incumbent Mike Bishop is seeking his third term in this Republican-leaning district. His challenger, Elissa Slotkin, is a political newcomer, but got her start in foreign intelligence with the CIA and has worked in national security under the Bush and Obama administrations.

Polling shows Bishop may be losing his meager lead over Slotkin, since he's now ahead by as few as three points.

16. Minnesota's 8th District: Joe Radinovich (D) vs. Pete Stauber (R)

With Democrat Rick Nolan retiring, and his one time campaign manager and former House representative Joe Radinovich, is hoping to fill his shoes. But the once solidly Democratic eighth district swung from Barack Obama to Donald Trump in the 2016 election. Republican challenger Pete Stauber is a former police lieutenant and professional hockey player who also served as a member of the St. Louis County Commission.

Polling shows that Radinovich has a fragile lead over Stauber by just one point.

17. New Jersey's 3rd District: Rep. Tom MacArthur (R) vs. Andy Kim (D)

Republican Tom MacArthur has served New Jersey's third district, which largely favored Barack Obama in the 2008 and 2012 elections, since 2014. His challenger, Democrat Andy Kim, has a background in national security and has pulled in donations from across the nation.

Most polls have placed Kim the front runner, naming leads as little as one point and as much as 19 points. The third district has been represented by a Republican since 2011.

18. New Mexico's 2nd District: Yvette Herrell (R) vs. Xochitl Torres Small (D)

District two is New Mexico's only red-leaning district. With Steve Pearce stepping down, Yvette Herrell, a state representative and strong Trump supporter, is the Republican nominee. Her challenger, Xochitl Torres Small, is a water rights lawyer and former Senate aide.

Though previous polls have placed Herrell ahead by as much as 14 points, her lead has dropped the just four points, with 6% of voters still undecided.

19. New York's 19th District: Rep. John Faso (R) vs. Antonio Delgado (D)

First-term representative John Faso, is locked in a tight race with his Democratic challenger Antonio Delgado, a former attorney and Rhodes Scholar. Barack Obama won the district by a narrow margin in 2008 and 2012, as did President Trump in the 2016 election.

Opponents of Delgado's have attacked his one-time stint as a rapper, but recent polls still place him in the lead by six points.

20. New York's 22nd District: Rep. Claudia Tenney (R) vs. Anthony Brindisi (D)

Republican Claudia Tenney is seeking re-election in this Republican-leaning district, however nearly half of voters view her unfavorably. Her Democratic challenger, Assemblyman Anthony Brindisi doesn't have her name recognition, but does have the support of 80% of Democrats in the district.

Recent polling puts Brindisi ahead by two points.

21. New York's 27th District: Rep. Chris Collins (R) vs. Nate McMurray (D)

Three-term incumbent Chris Collins was indicted earlier this year on insider trading charges. Now, one poll suggests long-shot Democratic challenger Nate McMurray, a supervisor of Grand Island, is tied with Collins.

22. North Carolina's 9th District: Mark Harris (R) vs. Dan McCready (D)

Republican newcomer Mark Harris, a Baptist minister, defeated incumbent Robert Pittenger in the primary, making this a race to watch. Democratic challenger Dan McCready, a former Marine, is also new to politics. He's billing himself as a moderate, while Harris is known for his deeply conservative stances on cultural issues like women in the workplace and gay marriage.

Recent polling puts McCready in the lead by four points.

23. North Carolina's 13th District: Rep. Ted Budd (R) vs. Kathy Manning (D)

Incumbent Ted Budd is often affiliated with the conservative Freedom Caucus, while his Democratic challenger, Kathy Manning, is a philanthropist and former immigration lawyer.

Though Manning has outraised him, Budd has almost consistently led in the polls.

24. Ohio's 1st District: Rep. Steve Chabot (R) vs Aftab Pureval (D)

Republican incumbent Steve Chabot has been serving district one since 1995, losing only one election in 2008. However, newcomer Aftab Pureval, a Ohio-born attorney, has outraised Chabot.

Polls typically put Chabot ahead by a few points, with the latest Sienna College poll showing a nine point lead among likely voters, but only a five point lead among registered voters.

25. Pennsylvania's 1st District: Rep. Brian Fitzpatrick (R) vs. Scott Wallace (D)

First-term incumbent Brian Fitzpatrick has the name recognition to propel him forward, but Pennsylvania's congressional map was recently redrawn in February. The first district is now blue-leaning and Democratic challenger Scott Wallace, a wealthy philanthropist, is arguing that Fitzpatrick hasn't done enough to distance himself from President Trump.

Fitzpatrick led in spring and summer polling, but a recent poll shows Wallace in the lead by eight points.

26. Texas's 7th District: Rep. John Culberson (R) vs. Lizzie Pannill Fletcher (D)

Republican John Culberson has been representing district seven since 2000 and has aligned himself with President Trump's hardline immigration policies. The Republican district, however, swung to the left, favoring Hillary Clinton in the 2016 election. Democratic challenger Lizzie Pannill Fletcher, a corporate litigator, is hoping to win over anti-Trump Republicans.

Latest polling shows Fletcher ahead by just two points.

27. Texas's 32nd District: Rep. Pete Sessions (R) vs. Colin Allred (D)

While incumbent Pete Sessions has easily won re-election, sometimes with no challenger, since 2002, district 32 broke from its history of voting Republican to give Hillary Clinton an edge in the 2016 election. Sessions is up against Democrat Colin Allred, a voting rights lawyer and former NFL linebacker who worked in the Department of Housing and Urban Development during the Obama administration.

Current polls show that Allred is leading the Republican-leaning district by just three points.

28. Utah's 4th District: Rep. Mia Love (R) vs. Ben McAdams (D)

Incumbent Mia Love, the only Republican on the Congressional Black Caucus, is seeking re-election in Utah's fourth district, where President Donald Trump is viewed slightly unfavorably. This bodes well for Democratic challenger Ben McAdams, mayor of Salt Lake County, who has billed himself as an independent thinker and bipartisan legislator.

Polls have consistently put Love ahead, but the margin between her and McAdams is never very wide.

29. Virginia's 2nd District: Rep. Scott Taylor (R) vs. Elaine Luria (D)

Republican Scott Taylor's campaign has been marred by scandal after allegations surfaced that his staffers helped get an independent nominee on the ballot to siphon votes from Democratic challenger Elaine Luria. Luria is a Navy veteran and political newcomer.

A recent poll puts Taylor ahead of Luria by one point.

30. Virginia's 7th District: Rep. Dave Brat (R) vs. Abigail Spanberger (D)

Republican Dave Brat has been representing district seven since 2014, when he beat House Majority Leader Eric Cantor in the primaries. Voters were less enthusiastic about Donald Trump in the 2016 election than they were about Mitt Romney in the 2012 election. Democratic challenger Abigail Spanberger, a former CIA officer, may win over moderate Republicans in the area.

Recent polls have shown that the two are tied in voter's eyes.

31. Washington's 8th District: Dino Rossi (R) vs. Dr. Kim Schrier (D)

Since its creation in 1983, Washington's eighth district has only sent Republicans to the House. Democratic challenger Dr. Kim Schrier, a pediatrician, looked like she might upend that trend in early polls against Republican nominee Dino Rossi, a well-known businessman who participated in the Washington Senate.

However, after Brett Kavanaugh's Senate hearing, Rossi has seen an uptick in popularity, especially among women. Latest polling places him 10 points ahead.
