despite this article, many of these books weren't “banned” but “challenged”. when someone has a problem with a book, they fill out a complaint, it then goes to the board and they look at the library's collection development policy. this document tells board how to act when this kind of situation arises. for the most part, they look at the book and basically try to justify it being in the collection. most books do not get banned because they have a legitimate reason for being in the collection. (but some DO get banned, thanks bible belt) speaking of which, the bible has been challenged! (ya, i went to library school (MSLS)
