Australian host of "The Feed" Marc Fennell asked "Mad Max: Fury Road" director George Miller about the feminist message at the heart of the film.
To recap (mild spoilers): Mad Max focuses on a rig driver, Imperator Furiosa (Charlize Theron) who helps five brides escape the clutches of an evil warlord who uses them to breed heirs for his dystopian kingdom.
The plot and Furiosa's central role have led to some online Men's Rights Activists to call for a boycott calling it "feminist propaganda".
"Men in America and around the world are going to be duped by explosions, fire tornadoes, and desert raiders into seeing what is guaranteed to be nothing more than feminist propaganda," read one blog post.
But shifting the focus away from Max (played by Tom Hardy) was a simple and obvious decision for Miller, who also wrote the film. The women needed to escape Immortan Joe...
But Miller said it didn't feel right to have another man rescue them.
Miller further explained to BuzzFeed's Adam B. Vary last week...
"(Furiosa's) the one who decides to escape [Joe] as [Max] is reduced to being a wild captive animal. She initiates the events of the story. He has got this more powerful, immediate, visceral motive.
"She's basically a female road warrior. He's the one who undergoes most change. … They're pretty equal."
Furiosa and her band of badass women are everything great about the film, tbh.
