hellbounda 6 months agoWell, actually…
The word “Thanksgiving” refers to a fast thanking the god Yahweh for killing enemies. So it is Jewish. However, “Thanksgiving” is as secular as Christmas, and it is also as pagan as Christmas. It is based on pretty much global harvest feasts. But as we know, stuffing your face and getting drunk is a secular activity, whether you’re an ancient Roman or some gal out in Winnipeg. This also goes for Christmas, all you “reason for the seasoners.” The reason is the weather, and it always has been. -

Terra Smith 6 months ago@samantham34 They should have worded it better but the question was if it was a holiday founded on religion, like Christmas or Easter, which it isn’t. It may have ties with religion but that’s not the ground for it. It’s just a holiday commemorating the settlement of the US and just happened to take place with a religious group.

Maren W. 6 months agoWhat is the point of this? Where did the questions come from, and what’s wrong with #3 in particular? If it happened at all, the Plymouth settlers’ “first Thanksgiving” was observed with the Wampanoag tribe, not generic “natives.” As for #7, Thanksgiving certainly does have religious significance for many people, and was in fact founded as a religious holiday.
