    Steps To Becoming A Mountaineer

Are you ready to become a Mountaineer but aren’t sure where to start? Let us help you make the journey from high school student to WVU Mountaineer. Use these steps as your roadmap and let country roads bring you home.

    Step 1

Your first step is finding a major. Not sure what to major in? Browse all 130- plus of our majors. Or find your career purpose by taking our Buzzfeed quiz. 📋 And, if you’re still not sure, that’s totally OK. At WVU, we’re all about exploring — whether that be a mountain range or a range of majors and careers. If you’re undecided about your path, you are not alone. Many first-year students start college undecided/undeclared. We’ll make sure you have the guidance and support you need to create an academic plan and turn your lifelong passion into a successful career. Seriously, you don’t have to have a roadmap 🗺 for your life from beginning to end.

    Step 2

Now you’ll need to apply! Our application only takes a few minutes to complete. In addition to applying, you’ll need to send us your official high school transcript. Just let your guidance counselor know where to send them. You’ll also need to submit your ACT (4540) or SAT (5904) scores to us. Together, all three pieces make a complete application.

    Step 3

Next, you should book an official campus tour! Taking a tour of campus is the best way to get a feel of what it will be like once you’re a student here. We offer daily tours and even a virtual tour. If you plan a tour during a week day, you can schedule a meeting with an academic department to learn more about your major and first-year experience. 😱

    Step 4

While you wait for a response on your application (about 4-6 weeks), you should brush up on our anthem, “Country Roads.” 🎼 You’ll need to know more than just the chorus. We suggest learning all of the lyrics.

    Step 5

Interested in attending an open house? Join us in October and November for our Discover WVU Days. It’s a great opportunity to learn about majors, meet faculty, talk with student services and hang out with current WVU students.

    Step 6

Are you worried about making friends? 🎬🎮 We have over 480 clubs on campus! Do you want to play competitive Quidditch? Or learn a new language like Japanese? We’ve got you covered. Take our Buzzfeed quiz to find a club that's right for you.

At the beginning of your first semester, you’ll also have a chance to attend an on-campus student organization fair. Joining a student organization can help you find your network at WVU.

    Step 7

Now that it’s been 4-6 weeks, you should have received your admissions decision. If you're in – welcome to the Mountaineer family! 💛💙 Don't forget to check your email for an official invite to the WVU School's App. There, you will be able to connect with other admitted students and swap information. You may even find your future roomie.

Finally, share your acceptance packet on social media using #WVUbound! Let the world know you’ve taken the next step in becoming a Mountaineer.
