Built on top of Native American burial grounds, Savannah is considered one of the most haunted places in the United States. The city's past has been darkened by slavery, epidemics, and bloody battles, stranding countless ghosts in its grand homes and picturesque squares. You're never quite alone in Savannah.

The Confederate and Union armies battled at Gettysburg on July 1, 1863 — a three-day bloodbath that left 50,000 men dead. Many of the Confederate soldiers were never properly buried, leaving their spirits to haunt the battleground for years to come. People claim to have heard cries from wounded soldiers and seen apparitions, including that of General Robert E. Lee.

You'd be hard-pressed to find someone who hasn't heard the sordid tale of the Salem witch trials, which, from February 1692 to May 1693, prosecuted and hanged 20 people on charges of witchcraft. There, victims of murder, fires, and the slave market still haunt the grand homes. Not to mention, the Big Easy has a long tradition of voodoo and hoodoo.

Galveston has a particularly spooky past after experiencing the country’s deadliest natural disaster: the Great Galveston Hurricane, aka the Great Storm of 1900. One of the city's most haunted sites is an 1867 building that served as a morgue after the storm, which killed approximately 8,000 Galveston residents — whose spirits are still lurking.

Many people believe Sleepy Hollow is one of the most haunted places in the world, thanks to the famous short story "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow." It tells the tale of the Headless Horseman, a Hessian trooper who had his head blown off by a stray cannonball during the Revolutionary War and now rides nightly through town to the battleground to find his lost head.
