Oddly enough, A Series of Unfortunate Events was very comforting to me as a child. My logic was that if the Baudelaire siblings could survive all that, I could definitely survive elementary school.

thesixthstation commented on Which YA Book Does Every Adult Need To Read?

Laini Taylor’s Daughter of Smoke and Bone series is fantastic. The premise may seem corny at first, but the excellent characterization and lovely prose will pull you in. It grapples with some very deep and intense themes, and creates a fantasy world that manages to feel both familiar…

My runners up are Spirited Away (plus anything else Miyazaki), Life of Pi, Mr. Hulot's Holiday, Inception, and Brazil, for anyone looking through the comments for recommendations :)

thesixthstation commented on What Is Literally The Best Film Ever Made?

2001: A Space Odyssey is, artistically speaking, probably the closest you can get to a perfect movie. The visuals are jaw-dropping, the special effects hold up well to this day, and its cinematography and themes have been massively influential on both the sci-fi genre and film as…

thesixthstation commented on What Short Books Should Everyone Read?

For comic and graphic novel fans, Nimona by Noelle Stevenson is a quick read that alternates between being insanely fun and devastatingly sad. Definitely a favorite of mine.

Coraline by Neil Gaiman. It's technically a children's book, but it's well-written and deliciously creepy enough to be appreciated by all ages. If you've only seen the movie, read the book- it's much scarier, and short enough to finish in a matter of hours.

Fantastic Mr. Fox definitely has a fall vibe to it. It's got such a unique, distinctive aesthetic and a color palette that makes me think of autumn.

thesixthstation commented on What Book Has Actually Scared You?

We Have Always Lived in the Castle by Shirley Jackson! It starts off immediately with a killer opening paragraph, and doesn't let up with its subtle creepiness. The first time I read it, I sped through it in a couple of hours, then immediately re-read it so I could catch all the little…
