32 TV Deaths That Nearly Made You Call In Sick The Next Day

Using up more Kleenex than a teenage boy over here.

We recently asked members of the BuzzFeed Community which TV character's death destroyed them emotionally. Here are some of the best (and saddest) answers.

Warning: This post PROBABLY contains spoilers if you're behind on some TV shows.

    1. William Hill, This Is Us

"Even though we all knew it was coming, I still buckled over like it was my own damn kin dying on the screen. I was sad for two days after. I barely ate, I drank a lot. I get FAR too close to characters sometimes."

    –Toya Davis, Facebook

    2. Michael Cordero, Jane The Virgin

    The CW

"I was crushed. I couldn’t watch it after that."

    3. Sun and Jin Kwon, Lost

"Not only did they spend three years trying to get back to each other, but we, the viewers, spent THREE REAL ACTUAL YEARS OF OUR LIVES waiting to see them reunite. Then we had to watch them orphan their daughter, whom Jin never met, one week later."

    –Mary Beth Kepshire, Facebook

    4. Mike Delfino, Desperate Housewives

"Mike from Desperate Housewives simultaneously broke my heart and enraged me. Sure, Susan was annoying at times, but did she HAVE to end up miserable and alone?"

    –JR Evans, Facebook

    5. Poussey Washington, Orange Is The New Black

"Poussey was the death I couldn’t get over. It was so heartbreaking watching her lay on the floor with Bailey on top of her, not being able to breathe! Taystee’s reaction killed me!"

    6. Mark Sloan and Lexie Grey, Grey's Anatomy

"I cried so hard after watching them die. They professed their love and should have started a life together, but noooooo. Their deaths wrecked me."

    –Lila Bickford-Seager, Facebook

    7. Keith Scott, One Tree Hill

    The CW

"The entire episode of the school shooting was emotional and painful, but then to lose such a beloved character? Adding in the fact that Dan shot Keith, but poor Jimmy was to blame for so long... ugh, my heart aches just thinking about it. And when Keith was talking to Jimmy and telling him that he knows how much pain he's in but it gets better... I sob every time."

    –Megan Kelterborn, Facebook

    8. The Starks/The Red Wedding episode, Game of Thrones

"Reading it in the books was one thing, but to see it acted out was so much more brutal. I honestly had to sit there for a good half hour just to decompress."

    –Kasey Uhlry, Facebook

    9. Sammy, Dance Academy

"Ugh, Sammy’s death on Dance Academy killed me both times I watched it. The reaction of his friends after learning of his death is so emotional and heartbreaking. Of course shows and movies always have to kill off the most innocent and lovable character."

    –Kassidy Flores, Facebook

    10. Sybil Branson, Downton Abbey

"Not only was her death incredibly realistic and violent, it came at a moment where everything was poised to go right in the show. I was completely blindsided! Of all people on that show, she deserved to die the least! I hadn't sobbed like that since my pet died."

    11. Jack Pearson, This Is Us

"I sobbed during the entire episode! Every time I saw the trailer for the reveal, I got teary-eyed. I love my Shonda Rhimes shows, but This Is Us tears my heart out."

    12. Haley Hotchner, Criminal Minds

"Mainly because her son was in the house and everyone heard her final words to Hotch over the phone."

    13. Claire McLeod, McLeod's Daughters

    Network 10

"Totally soul destroying! Will never get over it!"

    14. Derek Shepherd, Grey's Anatomy

"Every time I see Meredith holding her hand on his chest as he takes his last breath... I’m crying writing this!"

    –Chana Lerner, Facebook

    15. Lou Jackson Paige, Love My Way

"Breaks my heart every damn time. Best acting I have ever seen from Dan Wyllie and Claudia Karvan."

    16. Mark Greene, ER

"I bawled like I lost my best friend. It wasn't so much that I liked the character, it was more the entire situation with him finally having a good life, and then having it ripped away."

    –Teri Mills, Facebook

    17. Will Gardner, The Good Wife

"The reason it was so emotional is that it came as a total and complete surprise. Josh Charles had not mentioned publically that he was leaving the show and the death of this character was not at all foreshadowed or predicted at any point in the prior episodes of the season."

    –Matty Cormier, Facebook

    18. Tara Maclay, Buffy The Vampire Slayer

    The WB

"Every time I see it I'm bawling my eyes out like it's fresh."

    19. Finn Hudson, Glee

"Finn from Glee, f#*%ing wrecked me, especially knowing the cast was actually going through that with Corey's death."

    20. Dana Fairbanks, The L Word

"The most relatable character has to die? Really? I still have to skip Season 3 if I'm doing a rewatch of the series. Alice sitting there while crying to 'You Are My Sunshine' is still so devastating. They were supposed to end up together!"

    21. Bob Newby, Stranger Things 2

"He willingly risked his life for his girlfriend's kid, and knew he probably wouldn't make it out alive. I still haven't been able to rewatch that season because of Bob. Bob deserved better!"

    22. Hannah Baker, 13 Reasons Why

"Hannah Baker's death still has me fucked up... in a way we all know a Hannah."

    23. Grace Blood, Skins

"Ugh. That night I cried like a baby. That accident, and Rich having hallucinations about her before and after her death."

    24. Stefan Salvatore, The Vampire Diaries

"Like, I understand that everyone found peace, but he just got married, and just turned human – what he had been wanting for years. When he told Elena to tell Caroline how much he loved her, just before he went to hell, I bawled my eyes out. I cried even harder when she heard it."

    25. Hodor, Game of Thrones

"Hodor absolutely ruined me! I literally cried for an hour. Hodor was too pure for that show!"

    26. Patrick Reid, Offspring

    Network 10

"The episode where Patrick died and the few that followed were basically 60-minute, crying torture sessions. Patrick was a totally normal guy, about to have a baby, and they lulled us into hoping that he might be okay after being knocked over by a car, only for him to pass out with massive head trauma 15 minutes later. And then they had the heartbreaking reactions of the family, and the funeral, then Nina giving birth, and her spending the next season trying to come to grips with his death and move on. Five years on and it still hits just as hard every time I watch it. Or think about it."

    27. Marissa Cooper, The O.C.

"Marissa Cooper. She was getting her life on track and it was devastating. Still makes me cry to this day. RIP Marissa and Mischa Barton’s career."

    28. George O'Malley, Grey's Anatomy

"Could Shonda Rhimes be any crueler? Does she enjoy destroying what little happiness I had left in my cold heart?!"

    29. Lexa, The 100

"She was incredibly powerful, and she was just learning how to open up again. She and Clarke had just gotten together! God forbid the LGBTQ+ characters are actually happy for once. Lexa had to be hit by a stray bullet MEANT FOR CLARKE! And even though Clarke could somehow miraculously save everyone else on the show from fatal injuries, she couldn't help Lexa."

    30. J.T. Yorke, Degrassi: The Next Generation

    Bell Media

"He was about to tell Liberty that he still loved her, but he bumped into these two students of a rival school and one of them stabbed him in the back. The sad thing is, that Liberty was the one who found him on the ground, bleeding. It hurts my heart to this day that he never got to tell her his feelings."

    31. Bridget Parker, Neighbours

    Network 10

"11-year-old me was scarred for life! I’ll never forget watching that episode!"

    32. Seymour, Futurama

    20th Television (

"The dog waiting for Fry in Futurama. I know it is a cartoon, but I have never cried so hard at a fictional character's death."
