27 Aussie TV Shows To Add To Your Binge-Watch List

Your next lazy weekend is sorted.

Posted on

1. Offspring

Network 10

Offspring became one of Australia's most beloved dramas when it started in 2010. Nina Proudman completely won us over with her life and love dramas, kooky sense of imagination, and unorthodox family.

Watch it on Tenplay or Netflix AU.

2. Summer Heights High

ABC / Via presto.com.au

This mockumentary-style show will have you in stitches, with Chris Lilley effortlessly jumping from roles such as private schoolgirl Ja'mie to the likes of flamboyant drama teacher Mr G. If this series isn't enough for you, make sure to watch Ja'mie's very own Private School Girl when you're done.

Watch it on Presto, Stan, or Netflix AU.

3. Wentworth

Foxtel

Set in modern-day Australia, Wentworth focuses on Bea Smith, who enters prison after being charged with the attempted murder of her husband. It follows her journey of being separated from her daughter, as well as learning how to survive in the prison hierarchy.

4. Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries

ABC

Based on the novels by Kerry Greenwood, the series revolves around glamorous and sassy detective Phryne Fisher, who uses her sharp wit, intelligence, and pearl-handled pistol to solve crimes and fight injustice.

Watch it on Presto, Stan, or Netflix AU.

5. Love My Way

Fox 8

Ending before its time, Love My Way still has three seasons for you to binge-watch anyway. But warning, you might need a whole box of tissues.

Watch it on Presto.

6. Underbelly

Nine Network

This true-crime drama series will have you hooked from the start. Each season is based off a real-life crime, highlighting notorious drug kingpins, corrupt police, and seedy underworld figures.

Watch it on Stan.

7. Cleverman

ABC

The drama series reimagines stories of the Aboriginal Dreamtime in a modern superhero context, while focusing and reflecting on societal issues such as racism. Two estranged brothers are forced together to fight for their own survival when one of them is passed the mantle of the "Cleverman".

Watch it on ABC iView.

8. Real Housewives of Melbourne

Arena

For your all your trashy reality TV needs, the Real Housewives of Melbourne bring the drama that only only the ladies of Toorak can. Prepare to hear the word c*** unleashed way more on the Aussie series compared to any of the American ones.

Watch it on Foxtel Play.

9. Redfern Now

ABC / Via abc.net.au

The series tells the powerful stories of Indigenous Australians in the suburb of Redfern. It's the first drama series written, directed, and produced by Aboriginal talent, and each episode tells its own unique story of defining moments for the characters.

10. Wolf Creek

Stan / Via stan.com.au

A spin-off of the popular movie franchise, the TV series focuses on Eve, an American tourist who was targeted by serial killer Mick Taylor. She survives the attack and embarks on a revenge mission.

Watch it on Stan.

11. McLeod's Daughters

Nine Network

The series follows half-sisters Claire and Tess McLeod and their life on a farm in rural Australia. It was wildly popular in Australia in the early '00s, and (in my personal opinion) features perhaps one of the most heart-wrenching deaths in modern Australian TV history (Season 3 FYI). Don't say I didn't warn you.

Watch it on Stan.

12. SeaChange

ABC

Laura Gibson is a city lawyer, who undergoes a "seachange" and moves to a small, coastal town after her husband was arrested for fraud charges (and found to be cheating on Laura with her sister). The show follows her journey into single motherhood and how she deals with the major changes in her life.

Watch it on Stan and Netflix AU.

13. Love Child

Nine Network

Love Child follows the lives of staff and residents at a fictional hospital set in Kings Cross in the 1960s. Starring Jessica Marais, Miranda Tapsell, and Johnathan LaPaglia, the series is based on real-life forced adoption in Australia.

Watch it on Stan.

14. The Killing Field

Seven Network

If you're more into the thriller/mystery side of things, this show is the one for you. A young girl goes missing in a small country town, and a large-scale operation is organised to find her. Five dead bodies are discovered buried in a field, and a specialised team of detectives are flown in to find out what the hell is going on.

Watch it on Presto.

15. Black Comedy

ABC

Mixing observational, historical, and physical sketches, as well as parodies of film, TV, and commercials, Black Comedy is a look at Australian culture through the comedic eyes of Indigenous Australians.

Watch it on Stan and Presto.

16. Soul Mates

ABC

Soul Mates follows the story of two friends who are drawn together across the course of human history, from prehistoric times to the modern-day world. From fashion-obsessed Bondi Hipsters to secret agents from New Zealand, the show and the journey of the main characters will take you on quite the ride.

Watch it on Stan.

17. Round the Twist

ABC

Perhaps the most bizarre children's show of all time, the series focuses on Twist family, and their crazy adventures, often centered around a haunted lighthouse.

Watch it on Stan and Netflix AU.

18. Plonk

YouTube: Plonk / Via youtube.com

A satirical show about winemakers, Plonk follows the journey of a television crew as they attempt to produce an engaging show about the wine industry. It definitely has a Frontline-esque vibe to it, so if you loved Frontline back in the day, you'll probably love Plonk.

Watch it on Stan.

19. Rake

ABC

Rake follows the journey of Cleaver Greene, a successful but self-destructive criminal barrister who spends his life defending (mostly) guilty clients. The Fox Network also commissioned an American version of the series.

Watch it on Stan, Presto, and Netflix AU.

20. No Activity

Stan

The show follows the nightly exploits of two detectives and their criminal counterparts. Unlike the action or drama of other cops on TV shows, No Activity shows the detectives working long nights, watching and waiting, and revealing probably too much about their personal lives.

Watch it on Stan.

21. Always Greener

Seven Network / Via presto.com.au

The series revolves around two related families, the Taylors, who live in Sydney, and the Todd family, who live in rural New South Wales. With both families facing major problems of their own, they switch houses and uproot their lives for a change like no other.

22. City Homicide

23. Janet King

ABC

A spin-off from series The Crownies, the show follows the story of senior crown prosecutor Janet King, who is thrown into a shocking prosecution after returning from maternity leave. The case leads her through revelations that impact her life on every single level.

Watch it on Stan.

24. Danger 5

SBS

Set in a 1960s interpretation of World War II, the series follows a group of international spies on a mission to kill Adolf Hitler. Full of running gags and jokes, and with episodes only going 30 minutes, it's a perfect binge-watching show for when you just don't want to think too much.

Watch it on Netflix AU.

25. The Kettering Incident

Foxtel

Starring Matthew Le Nevez and Elizabeth Debicki, this drama series follows Anna Macy, who left Kettering when she was 14 after the disappearance of her best friend. Fifteen years on, Anna returns to find the town struggling, and another girl mysteriously disappears.

Watch it on Foxtel Play.

26. The Katering Show

YouTube: The Katering Show / Via youtube.com

The Katering Show is a hilarious series that parodies cooking shows and current food trends, and is basically perfect for your binge-watching needs on a lazy Sunday.

Watch it on YouTube.

27. The Slap

ABC

The series stems from one misjudged decision: slapping a child who's not your own. It starts with a birthday BBQ and the single act of a slap, which then begins to unravel the social fabric that once held the guests and their families all together.

Watch it on Presto.
