The first and third sentences include misplaced modifiers, meaning their dependent clauses are modifying the wrong noun. In both cases, the “someone” who loves chocolate is “Halloween”; in the second sentence, it’s “I.” And the fourth sentence swaps out the correct pronoun, “who,” for “that.”

As someone who loves chocolate, I think Halloween is the perfect holiday for me.

Choose the sentence that is grammatically correct.

The second sentence’s comma is incorrect because it isn’t introducing a separate clause; the em dash is connecting a dependent clause in such a way that it’s a misplaced modifier. The third sentence misinterprets “dead” as a verb instead of an adjective, which makes past perfect tense incorrect. The fourth sentence is falling victim to another misplaced modifier.

Juliana was already dead when the werewolves, their fur bathed in blood, arrived to save the village.

“Were” is the correct form of “to be” in the conditional tense, which is used for hypothetical scenarios.

If I were going to force you to watch _Hocus Pocus_ again, I would have done it by now.

Which sentence uses the conditional tense properly?

Only a handful of cities nationwide stand alone without a state following it, and the state is always spelled out, not abbreviated. Spiderwebs and cutout are closed without hyphens according to Merriam-Webster.com, our preferred dictionary. Williams’ should not be followed by an extra “S” because the possessive form makes a “Z” sound.

Back home in Evanston, Illinois, the scarecrow guarded a lawn covered with giant spiderwebs, and a cardboard cutout of Williams’ daughter slumped against the garbage can.

The first word after a colon is only capitalized if it starts a complete sentence. Pay special attention to the capital “F” in BuzzFeed!

In the 11th hour, BuzzFeed surprised readers with a spooky proposition: the opportunity to 3D-print a self-aware doll that speaks to the dead.
