a short history of nearly everything by Bill Bryson is a book that is the best ever book on science a non science person can read it and understand it. With all the usual bryson charm and humour it hits every note all non fiction books should aim for.
a book that stuck with me that I read as a child is The Five People You Meet in Heaven by Mitch Albom it a story that stuck with me and showed me that live could be beautiful and cruel at the same time
