Can You Tell Which Of These Common Voting &quot;Facts&quot; Are Actually Total Lies?

Many states offer [early voting](https://www.usa.gov/absentee-voting), and every state offers [absentee ballots](https://www.usa.gov/absentee-voting) that you can fill out ahead of time and mail in. However, every state has different rules and some require a valid excuse to obtain an absentee ballot.

You can usually vote before Election Day!

It is illegal to cast a ballot before Election Day starts.

It's a common misconception that people with felony convictions are never allowed to vote again. In reality, the laws on this totally vary state to state. You can learn more about your state's laws [here](http://www.ncsl.org/research/elections-and-campaigns/felon-voting-rights.aspx).

In many states, you can vote with a felony conviction!

Convicted felons are banned from voting anywhere in the US.  


Absentee ballots [count just as much](https://www.fvap.gov/uploads/FVAP/Outreach-Materials/FVAP_MythReality.pdf) as ballots submitted at the polls, as long as you make submission deadlines.

That's total BS!

Absentee ballots are only counted if the election is close.

The Supreme Court has [ruled](https://www.nytimes.com/2018/03/03/us/students-voter-turnout.html) that students are indeed allowed to vote in their school's state. Alternatively, you can register in your home state and vote absentee.

College students can vote where they go to school!

College students are allowed to vote in the state where they go to school.

Snapping a photo in the voting booth, in your polling place, or of your ballot may indeed be [illegal](https://www.newsweek.com/election-day-2017-ballot-selfies-illegal-703790) in your state. But there are lots of other ways to let your friends know you're a voter!

Yup, that's true!

Some states have made it illegal to take a selfie in a voting booth.  


A [variety](http://www.uscourts.gov/services-forms/jury-service/faqs-juror-information) of [sources](http://www.ncsc-jurystudies.org/~/media/Microsites/Files/CJS/SOS/sos_exec_sum.ashx) may be used by states to select potential jurors, including tax rolls, state ID or driver's license databases, and welfare recipient lists. So you might as well be registered to vote because you can still be called for jury duty.

Sorry, it's not that easy!

You can avoid jury duty by not registering to vote.

Most people [can't vote](https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/morning-mix/wp/2016/11/03/no-you-cant-text-your-vote-but-these-ads-tell-clinton-supporters-to-do-just-that/) online or via text, but, in many states, you can REGISTER to vote online by clicking [here](https://buzzfeed.turbovote.org/?r=mythquiz)!

Don't believe that BS!

In some states, you can vote online or via text.

Despite losing the popular vote, Donald Trump was able to win the Electoral College by fewer than [80,000 votes](https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/the-fix/wp/2016/12/01/donald-trump-will-be-president-thanks-to-80000-people-in-three-states/?utm_term=.d399f841165c). As Vanity Fair [noted](https://www.vanityfair.com/news/2016/12/hillary-clinton-margin-loss-votes), this means that the voters who determined the 2016 election could all fit inside a football stadium.

That is actually true!

The outcome of the 2016 presidential election came down to a group of voters so small, they could fit inside a football stadium.

ID is required in many states, but not all!

Identification is required to vote in every single state.

Provisional ballots are counted once the state is able to verify your eligibility to vote. So if you forget your ID, or the poll workers cannot find your name in their system, be sure to request that provisional ballot!

You can still fill out a provisional ballot!

If you don't bring ID to the polls and your state requires it, you will be turned away.
