    1. The first, unbreakable rule of applying makeup is to start with clean hands. Wash your hands with soap, or sanitize with the likes of this Dot and Key lavender and peppermint hand sanitiser - ₹395

Combines sanitiser and a moisturizer to keep hands clean and soft. Has jojoba, shea actives and lavender, and peppermint essential oils for a uniquely wonderful and natural fragrance. 0ml. Protects you from dryness and 99.9% of germs. No alcohol, artificial fragrance, or parabens.

Dot and Key lavender and peppermint hand sanitiser - ₹395

Or, get the citrusey Lifebuoy Lemon Fresh Hand Sanitizer, 50 ml - ₹65

    2. Every artist needs a clean canvas to work with. Take a few drops of a cleanser like the bestselling Garnier Micellar Water on a cotton pad, and run it over your face to cleanse and remove any traces of old makeup. Use Q-tips with micellar water to clean delicate, hard to reach spots like around your eyes - ₹131

Micellar removes dirt and impurities without drying your skin, and can be used as a makeup remover and face cleanser.

    3. If you want SUPER smooth skin, so the makeup glides right over, dermaplane away the tiny hairs on your face (not daily, but as and when needed) with a dermaplaner. Ideally do this a few hours or even a whole day before applying makeup - ₹512

Legend has it that even Marilyn Monroe and Elizabeth Taylor used to shave their face back in the day. Now, thanks to social media, dermaplaning has become mainstream again. Dermaplaning helps remove dead skin cells, exfoliate your face, and remove all the tiny little hairs to give you a super smooth face. It also helps makeup go on more smoothly.

The LetsShave Facial Razors (Set of 5) are perfect for at-home facial hair removal through dermaplaning.

Price: ₹512 for a set of five.

You can also try the Veet Sensitive Touch Electric Trimmer - ₹1,439

    4. Add spot patches to pimples if your skin has gone rogue and had a zit that deserves it's own name. You can wear makeup over it - ₹299

If you've ever felt powerless against a slow-healing pimple, the Spot Patch pimple patch is for you! Place it over your pimple to hide, protect, and heal it. Each patch can be worn for up to 24 hours and you can wear makeup over it as well.

    5. Moisturize your face with a light, non-greasy moisturizer (₹209). Apply lip balm (₹108) and let it marinate and soften your lips while you apply makeup.

    6. Primer is a "good to have," not a "must-have." It mattifies the skin, minimizes the appearance of lines and pores, and helps makeup latch on better. Always use only a minimal amount, ideally just on oily areas like your T-Zone. And if you have very dry skin, skip primer - ₹499

    7. A favourite tool of makeup artists is a silicone makeup brush cleaner (₹199), which easily and thoroughly cleans your brushes. Wash the brush with water, add baby shampoo (₹142) to the grooves of the cleaner and run the brush over it to remove residue.

Use the larger grooves for larger brushes and smaller grooves to clean smaller brushes.

    AY Silicone Brush Egg (₹199)

    Johnson's baby shampoo (₹142)

    8. A big part of makeup application is correcting as you go along. Keep copius amounts of three types of wipes handy for corrections: Q-tips, plain facial tissues and makeup wipes. Also keep an oil-based cleanser and cellotape at hand.

Use tissues dry to remove excess product from brushes. Use Q-tips for small areas and wet wipes for large areas along with a cleanser like plain miceller water, or even an oil-based cleanser for better removal. And the cellotape? Take small pieces of it to help strip off stray glitter.

Amazon Brand - Solimo Cotton Buds, Pack of 2 x 200 sticks per pack - ₹129

Amazon Brand - Solimo Facial Tissues, Pack of 4 x 100 tissues per pack - ₹259

Colorbar On The Go makeup wipes (30 wipes) - ₹250

    Garnier Oil-Infused Micellar Water - ₹146

    Scotch Magic Tape - ₹199

    9. If you're in a pinch (say, using the same brush for two different products and don't have time to wash and dry the brush), use brush cleaner, which is kind of like dry shampoo for makeup brushes. Note that this is a stop-gap, not a substitute for actually washing your brushes regularly.

    10. In addition to your set of basic makeup brushes, every true makeup addict has extras, like a beauty blender and an oval brush for foundation, as well as some fun looking vanity brushes like these jazzy fish brushes.

    11. They say that if your eyes are the window to your soul, your brows are the frame (by "they" I mean "me"). To learn how to get the perfect brows, along with steps check out our post: 17 Products And Steps For Your Best Eyebrows Ever.

If you're looking for an all-in-one basic product, get SUGAR Cosmetics Arch Arrival Brow Definer 02 Taupe Tom- ₹474, which has a brush and a spoolie.

    12. Instead of using kajal only on the lower lash line, tight-line your upper waterline as well, with Lakmé Eyeconic Kajal in deep black - ₹143

We usually apply kajal on our lower lash line. Apply kajal to your top waterline as well. This is called "tight lining". To take tightening further, instead of a clean line, you can even go a bit heavier in the areas between the lashes for a more intense look. This gives the impression of thicker lashes at the base. Overall, this technique really opens up your eyes and makes them look more striking.

    13. An eyeshadow base or eyeshadow primer helps the product latch on well and stay in place longer, making it a worthy investment - ₹306

For a good eyeshadow primer, get the Wet n Wild Photo Focus Eyeshadow Primer - ₹306. My personal favourite eyeshadow base is the M.A.C Pro Longwear Paint Pot in Layin' Low - ₹2400, which serves a similar function as a primer, can be worn as an eyeshadow itself, and can also be used as a base along with other products like shaow and liner, to help the colours pop.

    14. A universally flattering eyeshadow look is to go from light shades to dark shades as you go from the inner corner towards the outer corner of your eye. Keep it shimmery on the centre of the lid but matte on the crease and outer corners. Maybelline has several excellent, affordable eyeshadow palettes - from ₹543

Maybelline The Blushed Nudes palette - ₹543 has more options for lighter skin tones, while Maybelline The Nudes palette has more options for medium brown to deeper skin tones. But you don't have to choose— you can currently get both for ₹1,131, thanks to a 'Buy One Get One Free' offer!

    15. Line the top of your lids with a long-lasting eyeliner that doesn't budge, get this Sugar Cosmetics Waterproof Eyeliner . You can do a think or thick, basic or winged liner, and even experiment with abstract looks - ₹899

    16. Every makeup addict needs to be atop the latest trends, and eye makeup is going through a revolution right now. Check out our post 14 Hot Eye Makeup Trends And Products To Take You Into 2020

    18. Curl your eyelashes well with this bestselling and affordable Vega eye lash curler - ₹181

    19. After curling your lashes, apply mascara. Begin by running the wand over a clean tissue to remove excess. Start at the base of the lashes and wiggle your way to the tip. Remove any clumping with a spoolie brush, and clean any residue with Q-Tips.

    20. Glue on falsies (false lashes) for a very-on trend look. The most flattering lashes are either even throughout, or are longer towards the outer corner of the eye, which makes the eyes look "lifted."

For an everyday pair, get this set of 5 lashes from Electromania (₹169) . For a dramatic look, get the PAC mink lashes in M71 (₹375). Glue them using PAC Lash Fixer eyelash adhesive) - ₹395.

    21. Choose the right shade of concealer to conceal pigmentation and blemishes.

Use concealers with a yellow-orange or orange tone to conceal dark circles and blemishes. If you have lighter skin, use a lighter concealer that's more yellow-orange (or light orange) and if you have a darker complexion use a darker concealer in darker orange tones.

Maybelline Fit Me Concealer (₹380) comes in several different shades to suit various Indian skin tones. Apply using a brush or wand and blend in a circular motion so it looks indistinguishable from your skin.

    22. A lesser known trick is to spot-correct any redness with a green corrector - ₹260

If your skin is prone to redness, use a green concealer on those areas. Green and red are on opposite ends of the colour wheel, so a green concealer will neutralise redness and even out your skin tone.

LA Girl Pro Conceal Green Corrector - ₹260

    23. Choose the right foundation for your skin tone. Pick one that's half a shade lighter as foundations tend to oxidise so the colour will settle into your skin.

Wet 'n Wild Photo Focus Foundation - ₹300 has a range of shades to suit Indian skin tones.

    24. Apply highlighter to your cheekbones and high points of your face where the light hits.

When it comes to highlighter, more is more for the Insta baddie! Applying it to your cheekbone and brow bone is mandatory. Optionally, highlight your forehead, the centre of your nose, and your Cupid's Bow too. A champagne highlighter (a mix of gold and silver) is universally flattering for all skin tones.

For a cream highlighter to create a dewy look with, we recommend the Maybelline Face Studio Strobing Stick, Nude, ₹421 or the Maybelline New York Face Studio Strobing Cream, Nude - ₹462.

For a powder formula that works better for a matte makeup look, use the PAC Baked Highlighter 02 (Iconic), ₹831.

    25. Apply blush to the apples of your cheeks, right below where you would highlight.

    26. Finally contour areas of your face you'd like to push in to create a sculpted look.

The goal of contouring is to sculpt the face to look as oval-shaped as possible-- with a narrow forehead, narrow chin and fullest at the cheekbones. The key to contouring is restraint. (For instance, if you already have a narrow chin, don't further contour it.) Use a contour shade that's just a couple of shades darker than your skin tone and blend well so it looks very naturally sculpted.

    We recommend:

Maybelline Contour Palette, Light to Medium, ₹1,802

Maybelline Contour Palette, Medium to Deep, ₹2,022

    27. Finish with a great lipcolour in a shade that suits the look. The preferred favourite texture of make addicts right now is liquid matte.

Maybelline New York Super Stay Matte Ink Liquid Lipstick has 40+ shades. Our favourites are:

    Nude shade: Amazonian - ₹487

    Red shade: Ambitious - ₹487

    28. If you want to switch up your classic lippie for something trendy, you're in luck, because you're spoilt for choice given current trends. Find a look you love with our post 11 Lip Makeup Trends For 2020.
