29 Kids Shows You Haven't Seen On British TV Since 1996

The Demon Headmaster debuted 20 years ago this week. If that doesn't depress you, nothing will.

    1. It has now been 20 years, 20 YEARS, since Blue Peter had these presenters hosting the show.

    2. And it has been 20 years since Julie Etchingham and Chris Rogers were the presenters of Newsround.

That's Julie there, reporting on frictions within the band Oasis.

    3. The Demon Headmaster debuted in 1996.

It was on CBBC on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 5:10pm.

    4. So did The Queen's Nose.

When? Tuesdays at 4:35pm, followed by Newsround.

    5. And Dennis the Menace.

    6. And Hey Arnold!

    7. Little Mouse on the Prairie was on too.

I remember absolutely loathing this show.

    8. And Oscar's Orchestra.

A show about a talking piano that could fly for some reason.

    9. The Real Adventures of Jonny Quest.

    10. Out of Tune.

It was a sitcom. No footage of the show exists online, but much of it was filmed outside this church in Sydenham in Oxfordshire. It starred James Corden.

    11. And Saturday Aardvark.

    12. Andrew Hayden-Smith was on Byker Grove.

    13. What else was big? Julia Jekyll and Harriet Hyde.

It was a rather twisted show about a girl who turned into a monster (above right) after drinking something dodgy during a science project.

    14. Rugrats (of course).

    15. CITV's arts and crafts show The Big Bang.

    16. Agent Z and the Penguins from Mars.

This sitcom about practical jokers, which starred a very young Reggie Yates.

    17. Sports show Activ8.

Putting numbers in the middle of words was so "C00L IN THE 9TEES".

    18. And Run the Risk, presented by Bobby Davro.

    19. Richard Scarry was on its third series.

A show about a whole set of animals that live in the fictional city of Busytown. It directly followed Bodger & Badger.

    20. Bodger & Badger was on its sixth series.

There were more than 100 episodes in the end! We asked Americans to watch this show. One said: "Badger’s snout moves in a way I find to be unsavory."

    21. The Really Wild Show with Michaela Strachan was still going from strength to strength.

    22. Playdays actually ENDED nearly 20 years ago.

The penultimate year it was on CBBC was 1996. It ended in March 1997.

    23. Stage drama The Biz! also ended then.

    24. CBBC was still frequently showing repeats of Monster Cafe in 1996. The show ended in 1995.

    25. Grange Hill in 1996? It looked like this.

The 19th series of Grange Hill began in January, starring characters such as Wayne, Kevin, Arnie, and Mrs Jenkins.

    26. The presenters of Live & Kicking 20 years ago were Andi Peters and Emma Forbes.

What was on a typical show in 1996? "Entertainer Shane Richie, singer Louise, and the managing director of Birmingham City FC, Karren Brady."

    27. And what did they show during Live & Kicking?

Along with episodes of Rugrats and Spiderman. It was repeated during the week.

    28. And what did they show before Live & Kicking?

    29. And To Me... to You, a gameshow by The Chuckle Brothers, is now celebrating its 20th birthday.

Boy those were the days, weren't they?
