Here Are The 6 Most Important Pieces Of K-Pop News From This Week

Concerts, new music, and babies, oh my!

    by ,

Hi there! We're kicking off a series where we tell you about the most important things that happened in K-pop each week. Let's get into it!

    1. Exo's Chen announced he's getting married *and* that he and his fiancé are expecting their first child (squee)!

SM Entertainment / Via Lysn, SM Entertainment

Chen posted a handwritten letter to fans on the group's app Lysn, explaining he had "a girlfriend [that he wanted] to spend the rest of [his] life with." He also shared that he and his fiancé are expecting their first child. You can read the full translation of the letter here.

Congratulations to both Chen and his fiancé on their wedding and soon-to-be family! If you need us, we're going to be rewatching his episode of Return of Superman!

    2. Monsta X announced the North American leg of their world tour with a whopping 17 stops in the US and Canada.

    Starship Entertainment

This announcement came two days after Starship Entertainment announced that Joohoney will be taking a break to address anxiety symptoms — we wish nothing but healing and restful times for him!

Tickets go on sale at 3 p.m. TODAY (Jan. 17) at Live Nation.

But it's not just Monsta X hitting the road! CIX announced their first fan meeting in the US, with more information available soon!

    3. Meanwhile, the demand for tickets for Ateez's World Tour: The Fellowship: Map The Treasure was so intense that they had to release additional tickets.

    KQ Entertainment

The group has already sold-out multiple venues across the globe — including the Adrenaline Stadium in Moscow, AFAS Live in Amsterdam, The Forum in Los Angeles, and the Prudential Center in Newark — and on Monday, Jan. 13, released additional tickets for fans to see them strut their stuff to "Hala Hala" on stage. We're truly blessed!

Additional tickets are available now at Ticketmaster.

    4. Connect, BTS, the K-pop supergroup's global art project, kicked off to a tremendous start in London (and a day later, Berlin), featuring world-renowned artists and curators *and* a livestream from the superstars themselves.

    Big Hit Entertainment

Check out our social coverage of the Connect BTS event in London on Twitter!

As a reminder, there are three more cities — Bueno Aires, Seoul, and New York City — that will have a "Connect" event, according to the official comeback schedule.

    5. Sound the alarms! On Friday morning, BTS released their new single, "Black Swan" — mind you, a full month before their album, Map of the Soul: 7 drops.

The single was released alongside a five-and-a-half minute art film performed by Slovenian modern dance troupe MN Dance Company. The film kicks off with a quote by Martha Graham: "A dancer dies twice — once when they stop dancing, and this first death is the more painful."

BTS themselves will be performing the song for the first time on The Late Late Show with James Corden on Jan. 28!

In other Map of the Soul: 7 news, the album also broke their record for stock pre-orders for Map of the Soul: 7 with — wait for it — 3.42 million pre-orders from Jan. 9 (the day pre-orders started) to 15!

    6. Zico, Taeyeon, Jae (from Day6), and Sungjae (from BtoB) all released new music, while TXT made their official Japanese debut with the EP, Magic Hour.

KOZ Entertainment, Giuk Lee, SM Entertainment

Zico's "Any Song" earned the first certified all-kill of the year — and a bunch of K-pop legends like Lee Hyori, Mamamoo's Hwasa, Chungha, Winner's Mino, Sandara Park, and Crush jumped on the #AnysongChallenge wagon, much to our giddiness!

Taeyeon released her repackaged album, Purpose, with the lead track, "Dear Me," and two other new songs, "My Tragedy" and "Drawing Our Moments."

Day6's Jae released a solo project, "LA Trains," on his YouTube channel, JaeSix, and under the moniker, eaJ.

To cap it all off, BtoB's Sungjae released 3X2=6 Project Part Two with the songs, "W.A.U" and "Chicken."

P.S. Be sure to read our interview with Zico about his previous, more sentimental release, Thinking!
