11 Times TV Channels Were Temporarily Banned In India By The Government

    NDTV India will shut down for a day on November 9, but it's hardly the first time your TV has seen such a blackout.

    Earlier this week, the Information & Broadcasting Ministry announced that NDTV India would be suspended for 24 hours on November 9, for a segment it aired in January.

    While covering the Pathankot attacks earlier this year, the channel violated industry guidelines by allegedly divulging “crucial information” that could have alerted the terrorists and compromised national security.

    This is not the first time a TV channel has faced temporary suspension in India, though. Here are some other instances when the government decided to step in and enforce a blackout:

    1. Fashion TV

    FTV

    FTV has faced multiple suspensions in India, most recently in 2013, when it was banned for 10 days for "showing obscene and women-denigrating content".

    2. AXN

    AXN

    AXN was suspended for one day in April 2013, for telecasting the "A"-certified film Darkness Falls.

    3. Al Jazeera

    Al Jazeera

    After telecasting an inaccurate map of India, Al Jazeera was banned for five days in April 2015.

    4. Zoom TV

    Zoom

    Zoom faced a 24-hour suspension in 2013 for airing the "A"-certified film Teesri Aankh.

    5. UTV Bindass

    UTV

    An episode of the reality show Emotional Atyachaar earned UTV Bindass a 3-day suspension in November 2013 for "containing obscene content".

    6. Comedy Central

    Comedy Central

    An episode of Stand Up Club was deemed to contain "obscene dialogues and vulgar words derogatory to women", thus getting the channel banned for 10 days in May 2013.

    7. WB

    WB

    WB was taken off air for a day in January 2014 for airing It's a Boy Girl Thing, deemed to contain "obscene and women-denigrating content".

    8. Big CBS Love

    Big CBS Love

    An episode of Excused got the channel banned for 24 hours in October 2013, for containing "women-denigrating content".

    9. Enterr10

    Enterr10

    After telecasting three "A"-certified films, Musafir, Plan and Aashiq Banaya Aapne, Enterr 10 was ordered to be taken off air for a day in January 2013.

    10. Zing

    Zing

    Zing was taken off air for a day in early 2013 after airing "A"-certified film Hawas.

    11. ABN Andhrajyothy

    ABN

    ABN Andhrajyothy faced a ban of seven days in 2013 for airing Ide Mallea
    Velavan    , which was ruled to contain "obscene and women-denigrating content".
