This is turning out to be a cliffhanger between the two top Presidential contenders, Dr. Abdullah Abdullah and Ashraf Ghani Ahmadzai. Dr. Abdullah maintains the sizeable lead over his closest rival after the second round of results announced today by the Independent Election Commission (IEC). The total of 49.87 percent votes has been counted so far, according to the Chief of IEC Ahmad Yousuf Nuristani. Dr. Abdullah, who was running ahead of his two close rivals after the first vote count last week, has consolidated the lead, accumulating 44.4 percent votes. Mr. Ahmadzai is trailing behind with 33.2 percent votes. Dr. Zalmai Rasool, considered loyal to the outgoing President Hamid Karzai, is virtually out of the race. He has managed just 10.4 percent votes so far, with 50 percent vote count left now. He is followed by Professor Rab Rasool Sayyaf with 7.0 percent votes, Qutubuddin Hilal with 2.7 percent votes and Gul Agha Sherzai with 2.6 percent votes, Daud Sultanzoi with 0.5 percent votes, Hedayat Amin Arsala with 0.2 percent votes. The final results will be announced on April 24. If none of the candidates manages 50 percent votes after the announcement of final results, there will be a run-off between two front-runners. Some political analysts have already predicted a run-off between Dr. Abdullah and Mr. Ghani. “This is most probably going to second round and we already know who will be the two candidates taking on each other,” says Nasirullah Khalid, Research Manager at Afghanistan Justice Organisation (AJO). “In case of a run-off, it will be a very close contest with nail-biting finish.” Last week, after the 10 percent vote count was announced by IEC, Dr. Abdullah was leading with 41.9 percent votes followed by Mr. Ghani with 37.6 percent votes. - See more at: http://www.afghanzariza.com/2014/04/20/abdullah-consolidates-lead-over-ghani-after-second-round-results#sthash.OMes0Xkl.dpuf
