This week, I wrote a post about people sharing examples that prove how modern homes are poorly made/designed. Our BuzzFeed Community came through in the comments with examples of their own, and they're pretty spot-on.
Here's what they said:
1. "White kitchens. I don’t get it. Also every shade of gray imaginable. Color isn’t a bad thing. Dining rooms and formal living rooms are unnecessary and stupid. Give me a bigger kitchen eating area and a bigger family room — that’s where people are going to be. Also, lack of or small storage spaces. Like, pantry, coat closet, garage."
2. "I hate when they make everything 'built-in' — the TV, the microwave, the fridge. Forty years ago, things were made to last. Now, in the last 5–10 years, you have to spend extra money on refitting the appliance or have a weird gap around it."
3. "Concrete flooring! Why are new home builders putting down concrete flooring throughout the entire house? It’s ugly and such an unpleasant flooring choice."
4. "Using the entire size of the lot for solely the house. We would like a backyard to enjoy."
5. "Barn doors are ugly and useless! Stop putting them in every renovation or new build."
6. "Open shelves in kitchens for all your plates, glasses, etc. Looks really cool, but imagine all that dust and grime and grease that will settle on them. Yuck!"
7. "I was recently house-hunting and coat closets were rare, and entryways lacked space for racks etc. I'm in the mountains, so everyone needs coats. Where on earth are they putting them?!"
8. "Every time someone smashes out a cute, mid-century bathroom with colorful fixtures to make it a plain, white hellscape with LED lighting, a piece of my heart dies."
9. "Open concept homes. I don't want to live with my kitchen mess. I don't want to see my breakfast dishes or cluttered countertops when I walk in the door."

10. "In new, modern homes, the fixtures fall off; you'll find plastic where metal should be; the houses settle poorly and cause window cracks. There's major mold issues because they are over-insulated against cold, but not against moisture. I rented one of these disasters while I still had money and just had to laugh at how things just fell apart when you looked at them funny. They are only for looks, once you move in, you've got a money pit."
11. "Cookie cutter houses bunched on top of each other. There's no yard. You can open a window and touch your neighbor's house."
12. "White slab cabinet doors. Easiest way to make your million-dollar home look like it was styled with Ikea."
13. "Our new house was also constructed badly and we needed to replace the front door within a year of living there because the wood wasn’t treated properly, and it expanded and broke the doorframe a little."
14. "No medicine cabinets in the baths, just a mirror on the wall. Also, the bath drains in new houses never drain properly."
15. "Not having a driveway long enough to park a car on."
16. "The snout-house — where the front of the house is half garage. They do that to cram as many little boxes into a neighborhood as possible. You can reach out and knock on your neighbor's window while you're watching TV and your lawn is the size of a postage stamp."
