Can We Guess Where You Were Born Based On Your Taste In Music?
Growing up, New England faves like James Taylor, Aerosmith, and The Cars kept you nice and warm while you defended against those brutal winters. Whether you're still settled there or not, you'll never forget your wonderful classic rock upbringing.
You wish they could ALL be California girls, and with good reason. You're hip, chill, fun, and wildly exuberant. Your summer days partying at the beach and listening to Dr. Dre, Green Day, Jim Morrison, and Metallica will never be eclipsed by the faux West Coast nonsense playing on today's radio. But damnit, it's still fun.
From the land that brought us The Allman Brothers Band, Lynyrd Skynyrd, and Elvis Presley, you're as down-to-earth and well-mannered as they come. You don't necessarily have to love country music, but you can appreciate a nice tune and some well written lyrics when you hear 'em.
Sure, you might have been trapped inside the house most of the time because of the rain, but at least you got to familiarize yourself with some brooding geniuses like Nirvana, Alice in Chains, Modest Mouse, and Built to Spill. There might have been some livelier tunes coming out of this bustling part of the country, but they had nothing on these melancholy greats.
Your adolescence consisted of a more alternative scene, ranging from self-aware indie rock to laid-back disco pop. You might have listened to a bit of Earth, Wind & Fire, OneRepublic, or The Fray, but ultimately you knew how to develop an eclectic taste in music and embraced virtually anything that came your way.
While most people tend to think of the Great Plains as a place completely devoid of music, you can kindly remind them that the likes of Pat Metheny, Charlie Parker, and Lester Young all hail from this jazzy region of the U.S. If crossover blues or jazz wasn't necessarily your thing, you also had the likes of Puddle of Mudd or Janelle Monae to satiate your more modern taste.
You learned to stay out of the heat by cooling down to some mellow bands and folky existentialists like The Shins and Beirut. If you happened to move away from home, whenever anyone brings up Bo Diddley or John Denver you're constantly reminded of the best songwriters traveling the wide open desert in search of their next great inspirational track.
You grew up listening to some pretty experimental tunes as a kid, which has served to fuel and enrich your own creativity as an adult. You probably rocked out to some sweet ballads from Billie Holiday, dark cabaret rock from Tori Amos, or operatic contemporary tracks from the great Philip Glass. Never forget, both Sisqó and Beach House hail from this region, so there's no telling what this one-of-a-kind place can be expected to produce.
You probably spent your free time basking by the lake during a hot summer's day jamming out to the greatest Motown albums of our time — everything from Aretha Franklin to Stevie Wonder, and even Prince. You might have gotten down to a little Eminem and White Stripes while you were at it, but mainly you're just happy to call this exuberant musical gold mine "home."
