2. Lucy, left, said their mother was shocked when the twins were born.
“It was such a shock for her because obviously things like skin colour don’t show up on scans before birth,” she said. “So she had no idea that we were so different. When the midwife handed us both to her she was just speechless.”
3. The teenager said their friends had even made them produce their birth certificates to prove they are related.
“No one ever believes we are twins because I am white and Maria is black,” she said.
“Even when we dress alike, we still don’t even look like sisters, let alone twins. When we’ve met friends for the first time they never believe we are twins and they have even made us produce our birth certificates to prove that we are actually twins.”
4. The twins have three older siblings.
Lucy said she and her sister were at “opposite ends of the spectrum” in her family.
6. Even though they don’t look identical, Lucy said the bond between her and her sister is strong.
“We are proud of the fact that we are each other’s twin sister,” she added. “Maria loves telling people at college that she has a white twin – and I’m very proud of having a black twin.”
