Jigsaw puzzles are the best damn thing.
If you've never bought a puzzle before, here are a few puzzle-buying tips from me to you:
• The ideal number of pieces is really up to you. 500-piece puzzles are good for beginners and/or anyone who is looking to complete a puzzle in a single day, but I like doing 1,000 piece puzzles because you get double the entertainment for only a little bit more money. Meanwhile, my puzzle-loving coworker Terri says 750 pieces is the perfect size.
• Something I didn't really consider when I bought my first puzzles: 1,000-piece puzzles take up a lot more space while you're working on them than 500-piece puzzles. Also, vertical puzzles tend to require a bigger workspace than horizontal ones of the same size.
• While basically all puzzles are good, some are great, and that has a lot to do with the company who makes them. My coworkers and I love the puzzles from New York Puzzle Company, White Mountain Puzzles, Pomegranate, Galison, and eeBoo.
• If you want to shop for puzzles in a physical store, bookstores tend to have a much better selection than big-box retailers.
