You don't need to even like sports, or be good at them. Joining a team of some kind – and this can include stuff like trivia teams or role playing games – is a great way to give yourself a regular social activity to do, and a way to bond with people. And if it's exercise, there's obviously a lot of benefits to that.

This is tricky, but even if you feel like you're surrounded by people who are boring and don't get you, there's always some subculture or community that is right for you out there. The internet can definitely make it easier to find your people – some of them may be closer than you think.

Find Your People

It's understandable to feel shy and anxious, but getting out of the house is always a great way to meet new people. There's a lot of things you can do that aren't necessarily social – like reading at a bar or restaurant, or hanging out at a park – that put you out in the world, and give you the opportunity to really interact with people. You just have to work your way up to feeling comfortable occasionally striking up conversations with strangers, and not clamming up when people try to talk to you. You never know who you could meet, so try to be optimistic.

Be Alone In Public

We all know that online dating sucks, but it's still a pretty efficient way to meet people. It can be demoralizing and feel futile sometimes, but lots of people make amazing connections and if you take a lot of chances, your likelihood of being a success story is much greater.

Sometimes the best way to get out of a rut is to go somewhere else. You could meet exciting new people in your travels, or just come away from the experience feeling a renewed enthusiasm for life.

Travel

There's a lot of forms this could take – you could join a band or choir, become part of an improv group, get involved in some kind of local arts project. Having an outlet for creativity is a great thing, and the thrill of collaborating with other people can satisfy a lot of social and personal needs.
