Stephen Harper Will Resign From Parliament This Summer

The former prime minister plans to give up his seat in the House of Commons, a source confirms.

BuzzFeed Canada is able to confirm a Globe and Mail report that Stephen Harper plans to retire from the House of Commons sometime before the fall.

Harper's plan was always to step down this summer, says a person who knows him.

He's been mostly invisible since his nine-year run as prime minister ended last October in an election defeat to Justin Trudeau's Liberals.

Harper has refused all media interviews since and has not said a single word in the House of Commons, though he does regularly show up for votes.

The Globe's Robert Fife reports that Harper is considering setting up his own international institute.
