I think this relates to an interesting debate that comes up when people want to change the races of fictional characters. On one side, fans are passionate about these characters and freak out if the movies change them at all. As a result, the actors hired are commonly much more than just the same race/gender, they’re almost carbon copies of the pictures in the comics (esp. Professor X, Thor, Harry Potter, Wolverine, etc.). So how can you change the race of Thor or Wonder Woman if comic book nerds would freak out if you even changed their hair color (there is a Big Bang Theory about how “Wonder Woman is NOT blond”)? But on the other side, an unfortunate history of making almost every fictional character white has left us in a situation where most of the A-list characters are white. Little kids look up to Superman, Batman, Spiderman, etc. and it would be nice if at least one of them was a POC. Personally, I think the societal benefits and desire to hire someone who would be really good at it outweigh the “accuracy” argument and they should cast Donald Glover as Spiderman, Idris Elba as Bond (a concept that Rush Limbaugh freaked out about), etc. I’m not a diehard comic book fan though so maybe the “this is what they looked like, end of story” argument doesn’t resonate with me as much. I’m sure for some having Will Smith play Superman would be just as inaccurate/strange as if you cast him as Abraham Lincoln.

I think the only thing wrong with this article is the title that Buzzfeed gave it. The tumblr posts are exercises in fantasy casting in which the races (and sometimes genders) are swapped. This is a fun exercise that also demonstrates how few good parts are going to people of color. Buzzfeed, however, gave the list a title that insinuates these changes are objectively better, which isn’t necessarily true. Robert Downey Jr. and Chris Hemsworth play Iron Man and Thor really well so while you might change the casting of some other Avengers or superheroes (Donald Glover for Spiderman!), you probably wouldn’t change those. I like Michael Ealy as Hawkeye though. Matthew Perry IS Chandler Bing and I wouldn’t cast Drake in anything so I’ll keep Matt LeBlanc. I think Idris Elba would make a great Bond (and a decent Superman), but for some reason I don’t see him as Batman. Sendhil Ramamurthy would be a pretty good Batman. Overall, I think the tumblr’s were just an exercise in switching up the races, not an attempt to actually recast and create something “better”.
