It's no secret that this summer belongs to Barbie. It's easily the most highly anticipated movie of 2023, and as we get closer to its release, everyone (myself included) is getting more and more excited.
With the hype surrounding Barbie at an all-time high — every single poster, trailer, press day, and more has fans freaking out on the internet over the movie — it's no surprise that people are already wondering what's next for those behind the movie.
Namely, everyone is excited to see what Greta Gerwig will do next. Prior to directing and co-writing Barbie, she notably wrote and directed Lady Bird in 2017 and Little Women in 2019.
Barbie marks Greta's first major "blockbuster" film, which is something she's been wanting to do for a while. In a recent New Yorker article, Jeremy Barber, an agent at UTA who represents Greta, said, "Greta and I have been very consciously constructing a career. Her ambition is to be not the biggest woman director but a big studio director. And Barbie was a piece of I.P. that was resonant to her."
In the same New Yorker piece, it was reported that Greta "has a deal with Netflix to write and direct at least two films based on C. S. Lewis's The Chronicles of Narnia."
Netflix has not officially commented on the news, but the streamer did acquire the film and TV rights to The Chronicles of Narnia book series in 2018.
At the time, co-CEO of Netflix Ted Sarandos said, "Families have fallen in love with characters like Aslan and the entire world of Narnia, and we’re thrilled to be their home for years to come."
Of course, prior to Netflix, Disney and Fox made adaptations of the beloved C. S. Lewis series. The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, Prince Caspian, and The Voyage of the Dawn Treader were released in 2005, 2008, and 2010 respectively.
While Greta adapting The Chronicles of Narnia is still clearly in the very EARLY stages, the news didn't stop the internet from going absolutely wild over what she could bring to a new adaptation:
Also, this isn't the first beloved book series to get a new adaptation. Notably, Percy Jackson is being adapted into a TV series for Disney+ after it was previously adapted into two movies starring Logan Lerman.
Whether Greta ends up re-adapting the Pevensie children's adventures or exploring other stories within the Narnia universe, I am super excited to see it!
