There are obviously MASSIVE spoilers ahead for Barbie!
1. First, Margot Robbie and Greta Gerwig originally wanted to include a joke in Barbie about Margot and Emma Mackey looking similar IRL, but the joke was cut after they got into costume and realized that they didn't look that similar as their respective Barbies.
2. Greta tried really hard to include a cameo from Saoirse Ronan, who previously starred in Lady Bird and Little Women, which Greta wrote and directed.
3. In addition, Greta tried to get Timothée Chalamet, who also starred in Lady Bird and Little Women, to make a quick appearance in Barbie, but as with Saoirse, it just never worked out with his busy schedule.
4. There were originally ideas to have Stereotypical Barbie (Margot) and Ken (Ryan Gosling) kiss in the movie. They discussed it so much that Ryan and Margot even talked through what the logistics of these two characters trying to kiss would look like.
5. According to a behind-the-scenes photo of one of the original storyboards for Barbie, which shows the order of the scenes, there was going to be a moment when we see Midge (Emerald Fennell) in labor.
6. Also, in the same Midge-in-labor scene that was cut, Helen Mirren, who was the narrator, would have appeared onscreen.
7. Another scrapped scene, which would have come at the very beginning of the movie, involved a moment when we learned about the creation of Barbie Land.
8. There was originally a line on Page 1 of Barbie that involved "an extended joke with Marie Curie," according to Greta. She continued: "There was a Page 1 f-bomb that sort of just set the tone for the whole thing ... it was actually Helen Mirren saying to Marie Curie: 'Pipe the fuck down, Marie Curie.' That was, like, my favorite."
9. The first version of the Barbie script featured a line from Weird Barbie (Kate McKinnon) where she tells Stereotypical Barbie, "I can't help you on account of the giddy-up in my hip." In context, the line was so good that it was the reason Kate wanted to do the movie.
10. In one of the early cuts of the movie, Greta revealed that there was a "fart opera" in the middle of the film. "I thought it was really funny. And that was not the consensus," she explained.
11. Jonathan Groff was first approached to play Allan, who was ultimately played by Michael Cera. Jonathan ended up turning down the role because of various scheduling conflicts.
12. Similarly, because of COVID restrictions while the movie shot in London, Dan Levy, Bowen Yang, and Ben Platt also turned down the chance to star as various Kens in Barbie Land.
13. During the montage of the Barbies stealing the other Barbies away from the Kens to un-brainwash them, there was originally a moment when one Barbie, played by Ana Cruz Kayne, pretended to drown so that a Ken would try to save her.
14. There were also scenes titled, "Mattel Bldg for Rent," "Ken Toys Returned," "Barbie Can Save Us," and more that didn't make it into the final cut of the movie.
15. And finally, according to a behind-the-scenes photo, there was originally going to be a scene featuring Ken and Weird Barbie, with Weird Barbie holding Ken in Barbie's pool while he clutched an ice cream cone.
