Internships 101: The All-In-One Guide To Being An Intern

First and foremost, congratulations on your internship...or at least the fact that you’re considering interning! You’ve clearly been thinking about your future and are interested in kicking your career off in the right direction.

It's OK if you're nervous, that's completely normal. Fortunately, I've created a survival guide to give you some helpful information for your time as an intern:

Sometimes finding an internship means going above and beyond to catch the attention of employers. Maybe your awesome personal website or selfless volunteer experience will help you stand out?

While other times landing an internship it's all about who you know.

But beware, your online image must be in tip-top shape to ensure you don't turn away employers.

No worries, you've got this! You nailed your interview and just received a great internship offer!

Be sure to take some time to consider the offer. Remember, unpaid internships aren't a right of passage and you deserve to be paid at least the federal minimum wage for your internship duties.

What about flexibility? Is your employer going to be able to accommodate your schedule? Will you be able to work remotely if possible?

Now that your start date has been set, it's time to prepare.

What about a list of personal goals and expectations?

Have you squared everything away with your college if you're interested in receiving college credit?

So, it's the night before your first day at your internship.

Pick out an outfit that ensures you'll dress to impress; then get some rest.

Alright, it's "go time." Drink some coffee and arrive fashionably early to your first day at your internship.

You'll likely be taking care of paperwork, doing onboarding and training, as well as getting to know your fellow interns, coworkers, and managers.

OK, now it's time to get down to business. You manager will likely assign you daily, weekly, monthly, and even semester-long internship projects.

Don't be afraid to speak up and ask questions, but make sure they're valid and thought out! Meeting and communicating with your manager frequently will ensure things are going smoothly for both parties.

Keep a record of your success and make sure to save all the projects you're working on to potentially showcase in your portfolio.

Remember, you'll likely be tackling some administrative duties too. That's part of every job. Slap a smile on your face and work just as hard on these tasks as you do your major projects.

Don't forget to always take notes!

Take advantage of every training, mentoring, and learning opportunity made available to you.

Also, don't be afraid to get a little competitive with your fellow interns. This drives productivity, engagement, and overall output.

Attend company and client events that you're invited to. Building relationships with your coworkers is a great way to fit into company culture and enjoy your internship.

Take your internal networking a step further by asking higher-ups you respect to grab coffee and chat about their career. This is a great way to learn and grow as an intern, as well as expand your network.

Avoid gossip and negativity like the plague.

Always be willing to go the extra mile on your projects and to lend a hand whenever or wherever you can.

Slow day? Create your own projects, do some competitive research, or ask your manager how you can help.

Hit a bump in the road? Don't panic. Consult your peers or your manager to get things straightened out.

Focus on learning something new every day.

The months are going to fly by, and before you know it, your internship will be coming to a close.

Be gracious. Don't ever forget the power of saying "thank you" or sending a thank-you note.

Schedule a performance review with your manager and carefully consider their feedback.

They might even ask you to intern again…

Or better yet, offer you a job!

Regardless, keep in touch and do your best to spread the word about your internship experience.
