Anderson was the first black singer to debut at the Metropolitan Opera House. Marian received several global offers from opera houses and a personal invitation from Konstantin Stanislavsky to perform the lead role in _Carmen_ at Moscow's Art Theater production. She turned down almost all of them, because she had never been trained in opera singing. She lead an extremely private life and always loved recitals. Marian never wanted to be part of a huge production.

Marian Anderson (1897-1993)

Dobbs was first black person to perform in a role at La Scala Opera House in Milan, Italy. She started off playing piano for ten years before starting vocal lessons in college. Mattiwilda received a Bachelor's in music and a Master of Arts in Spanish. She then studied at Mannes Music School for four years. She also attended the University of Mexico. Her Metropolitan Opera House debut was in 1956. There, she was featured as their first leading black soprano. Later in life, she served tenures at several academic institutes.

Mattiwilda Dobbs (1925-2015)

Davy was the first black artist to be cast in the title role of Verdi's _Adia_ at the Metropolitan Opera House. Gloria attended Julliard and stayed for an extra year to study opera singing. She made her Metropolitan Opera House debut in 1958, and she stayed with them for four seasons. Later in life, she became a professor in the school of music at Indiana University.

Gloria Davy (1931-2012)

Swift was the first woman to completely compose a Broadway musical score. Kay studied at Julliard and the New England Conservatory. She wrote the musical score for _Fine and Dandy_ in 1930. The title song was recorded by Barbra Streisand on her album _People_. Kay also worked as a staff composer at Radio City Music Hall.

Mary is the daughter of Richard Rodgers who was the co-composer of the notable duo, Roger and Hammerstein. She wrote the musical score for _Once Upon A Mattress_. Mary is also responsible for writing the _Freaky Friday_ book and, later, the musical adaption. She was actively involved in Rodger and Hammerstein productions. Later in life, Mary was seated on the board of directors at the Julliard School.

Mary Rodgers (1931-2014)

Grant was the first black woman to compose a complete score for Broadway. She started off studying violin and double bass. She was a featuring composer on several musicals both on and off Broadway. She has an electric style of music that incorporates her background in blues, gospel, and calypso. Grant was also responsible for writing an all-black cast musical called _Don't Bother Me, I Can't Cope_.

Micki Grant (1929- )

Conducted and directed by Florence Love, this band was stationed at Stark General Hospital and was responsible for welcoming home the injured soldiers as they were taken off the ship and transported to the nearby military hospital. They would either play on a yacht that would meet the ship or on the pier where the ship would dock. They were also the only band assigned to perform on a regular basis at the hospital.

403rd Women's Army Corps Band

They were responsible for entertaining the soldiers in the hospitals and keeping morale up in the hospital staff. They played formal concerts, dances, and a Dixieland sextet that they used to play around through the wards. Members of this band noted that even though it was difficult to see what the soldiers had been through, they always loved performing so that they could bring a little bit of joy back into these men's lives.

The Marine Corps Women's Reserve Band

This Army band was created by Adah Straus after she returned from one month of training at a Special Services and Morale school. The band was made up of five women — not including Staus — who were members of the 403rd Women's Army Corps Band. They performed both vocal and instrumental pieces as well as a few comedy skits around the hospital.
