Sheryl Lee Ralph is sharing how taking a chance on herself ultimately paid off in the end, both literally and figuratively.
Earlier today, W Magazine shared a clip on Instagram from an interview with Sheryl Lee Ralph from their Screen Test series. In the video, Sheryl opened up about her introduction into Hollywood and the small sacrifice she had to make to get that jumpstart in her career.
"I'll never forget the first job that I booked was right out of college: A Skippy peanut butter commercial," Sheryl told W Magazine.
"I always keep peanut butter in my cabinet to this day, because the choice was go to graduation for Rutgers or shoot the Skippy peanut butter."
Spoiler alert: She chose the commercial! That decision might have cost her a milestone moment, but it also opened up the door to her career and allowed her to sharpen her skills.
"{My] first job, I put all of that money — I made $30K — and I put in the bank. And because of that, I never had to do anything but hone my craft and work on building my career."
Sheryl went on to thank Skippy and George Washington Carver for the opportunity. And what an opportunity it was. Since the commercial, Sheryl has starred on Broadway, had a string of hit TV series and films, and became an Emmy Award winner.
