Mindy Kaling Finally Explained Why "Never Have I Ever" Is Ending Next Year, And Her Reasoning Makes Perfect Sense

"It starts looking insane that a 34-year-old is playing a 15-year-old."

In early March, it was announced that Never Have I Ever was not only renewed for a fourth season, but it would also be their final one.

And now, during a recent interview with Entertainment Tonight, co-creator Mindy Kaling is opening up about the reasoning behind the decision.

"Four seasons for a high school show felt like it made sense,” Mindy said. “They can’t be in high school forever. We’ve seen those shows."

"Like, you’ve been in high school for 12 years. What is going on here? Also, the actors get older and it starts looking insane that a 34-year-old is playing a 15-year-old.”

Which makes perfect sense, since the show surrounds an Indian American teenager navigating high school, friendships, and new romantic relationships, while grappling with the death of her father. Four seasons to match four years of schooling sounds just about right.

"The truth is," Mindy added, "we got to know the characters. The great thing about doing it on Netflix is that we got to tell stories that you wouldn’t necessarily be able to tell in traditional network shows."

"So we feel good. We really told the story of this 15-year-old girl and that felt like the perfect amount of time.”

So, what will life look like for Devi and her friends after graduation? I guess we'll just have to wait and see.

Season 3 of Never Have I Ever is set to hit Netflix this summer, while the fourth and final will debut sometime in 2023.
