Here's What The 2008 Women's Gymnastics Team Is Doing Today

Eight years has happened, people!

Posted on

The year was 2008.

People used BlackBerrys, Ed Hardy was a thing people wore, and the USA won a silver medal for gymnastics at the Beijing Olympic Games.

Its been eight years since Team USA was robbed of that gold medal and I am going to tell you what they're up to today.

If you *somehow* forgot, here are their names: Bridget Sloan, Alicia Sacramone, Samantha Peszek, Chellsie Memmel, Nastia Liukin, and Shawn Johnson.

Shawn Johnson then:

She won the silver in the all-around competition, a gold on balance beam, and a silver on floor. She was the It girl going into the games but had her all-around snatched away by her teammate Nastia.

Shawn Johnson now:

She apparently eats a lot of eggs.

She also got married and has this really hot husband.

Since the games, Shawn competed twice on Dancing With the Stars. In 2016, she released a fictional book called The Flip Side about a girl masquerading as a normal teen who actually happens to be a really good gymnast. It sounds very Hannah Montana TBH.

Chellsie Memmel then:

She broke her ankle training in Beijing just before the games began but was still able to compete on the uneven bars in the team final.

She also read the new Harry Potter book.

Chelssea retired from gymnastics in 2012 after failing to make the Olympic team. She married a mechanical engineer in 2013 and had a kid in 2015.

Bridget Sloan then:

She was the youngest member on the team and was crucial in their advancement to the final after two members got last-minute injuries. She wasn't even supposed to compete!

Bridget Sloan now:

She can still do that^

She also just graduated from college.

She tried to qualify for the 2012 Olympics but hurt her elbow, sooo she went to college instead. She competed in gymnastics for the University of Florida for four years and just graduated in 2016 with a degree in communications.

Samantha Peszek then:

She was supposed to compete in all four events in Beijing but injured her ankle literally 20 minutes before team qualification. Like Bridget, she could only compete on the uneven bars in the team final. Truly *Kim Kardashian GIF* tragic.

Samantha Peszek now:

In 2015, eight years after Beijing, she won the NCAA gymnastics all-around at UCLA. That's nuts.

She also can do this:

She graduated from UCLA in 2015 and does some gymnastics commentating on on the side.

Alicia Sacramone then:

She came in fourth on vault.

Alicia Sacramone now:

She literally had a baby during the Rio opening ceremony.

She's also apparently a big Chrissie Teigen cookbook fan.

In 2012, Alicia tried to qualify for the Olympics but (obviously) didn't make it. She is the co-founder of some thing called The Gympire and was inducted into the Gymnastics Hall of Fame in 2016.

Nastia Liukin then:

Nastia was the all-around champion (obviously). She won bronze on floor exercise and two silvers on beam and bars. She is royalty.

Nastia Liukin now:

She graduated in 2016 from NYU with a degree in sports management.

She also bakes American-themed cakes with her old teammate Shawn.

Besides her iconic 2008 Gossip Girl appearance, Nastia continued her career in gymnastics, just missing out on making the 2012 team. After that, she went to school and now does gymnastics commentating for NBC in Rio.

And finally, last but not least, here's a partial reunion the team had this year:

Final thought: You all rock. Never change.

Correction: The date of the team reunion has been fixed. It happened in 2016, not 2008 because that wouldn't make it a reunion. Alicia also came in 4th on vault. Oops.

Watch the American women led by Simone Biles in the Gymnastics team final tonight in primetime at 8 p.m. ET on NBC.
