    1. Some room freshening sprays to neutralize Fido's funk — a must if you live in a shoebox.

    The sprays

Promising review: "It smells amazing, lasts for about a day, and covers dog smells right up! I sprayed it on my dog's bed, let it dry, and it took the smell right away!! Also used it on my bedsheets because the dog sometimes sleeps with us took the smell right out!" —Amanda

Price: Sunwashed Cotton for $9.99, Mango Peach for $9.98, and Fresh Citrus for $9.99

    2. A FURminator brush for pets who just. won't. stop. shedding. They'll love the brushing and you'll love not having to lint roll your pants every time you get up from the couch.

Promising review: "I live in Arizona and the heat is not kind to my fluffy cat. As soon as we moved here from up north, she started shedding like crazy in response to the heat! I had taken her to groomers for various de-shedding treatments because she hated being brushed but it quickly got too expensive. I found this (at a much more reasonable price then in stores BTW) and figured it couldn't hurt to try, even if it says its 'for dogs.' Now as soon as I pull this out of the drawer my cat hops up in my lap and purrs like a machine; she loves being brushed with the FURminator!! It lightens her crazy thick undercoat and allows me a little break from vacuuming almost every day! I tell anyone with cats or dogs who have thick hair to pick one up immediately!!" —Lauren

Price: $29.95 (available in two sizes and two styles)

    3. An immunity-boosting allergy supplement because your doggo deserves relief from their allergies and skin sensitivities. These soft chews deliver a dose of probiotics and other nutrients to help improve immune function, aide digestion, promote healthy skin, and add shine to a dog's coat.

    MariaKam / Chewy

Promising review: "Each fall my American Eskimo seems to suffer from seasonal skin allergies. Her skin is visibly pink through her white fur and she chews herself to ease the itch to the point where she breaks her own skin and draws blood. We have been to several vets and tried prescription drugs, sprays, twice daily prescription foot washes, etc. with no cure. I tried these allergy bites on a whim early in the season (August or September) and she never had any irritation this season. We have not moved or changed anything else in her routine. If your dog is suffering from allergy/seasonal skin discomfort you absolutely must try these. I attached before and after pictures to show you the amazing difference." —MariaKam

    Price: $25.96

    4. A pet carrier if your dog has decided that their carrier is Public Enemy No. 1. This bag is designed to keep your pet calm — it's roomy and has a heads-out design — so you can travel with and groom them without issue.

Promising review: "Love this one. It's breathable, breaks down easily, and I can just hose it off to clean it. My dog seems quite comfortable in it, also. Very happy with this purchase." —Gilly

Price: $17.99+ (available in two sizes)

    5. An adorable and basically tear-resistant stuffed duck so you can stop spending money on toys that your furry destroyer shreds in approximately 10 seconds. This lil' quacker doesn't look like it, but it's built to last.

    The duck

Promising review: "I bought this for my granddog when my daughter brought him home. This was his first plush toy and as an 85-pound 1-year-old puppy it is still his favorite. For whatever reason he has not destroyed it! He won’t leave the house without it! It goes with him in the car every day on the way to daycare. I’m shocked at how well it has stood up to a large breed dog for an entire year." —Tish

    Price: $7.90

    6. An antibacterial, safe-to-swallow toothpaste that'll help prevent plaque buildup that can make your dog's breath extra funky.

    The toothpaste
    Blondie96 / Chewy

Promising review: "My pup loves this toothpaste! It’s the first kind we’ve tried and I highly recommend it. I haven’t been using it for long so I can’t comment on anything long-term, but his breath definitely smells better now. I desensitized him to the toothbrush before adding toothpaste, and he looks forward to getting his teeth brushed now. My cat isn’t a huge fan of it but she doesn’t seem to mind too much. All in all, I highly recommend this toothpaste!" —Blondie96

    Price: $9.44

    7. A pack of stain-removing pads to tackle the inevitable messes that come with owning a pet. Pee? Check! Poop? Check! Vomit? Check! (You can even use them to clean up your wine spills.)

    Evaa / Chewy

Promising review: "These work great! So convenient, especially in the mornings before work where I don’t have time to scrub carpet or use machines. Simply soak up as much urine as you can, open the package, place it wet side down over the urine spot, and stand/stomp to release the liquid. I’ll leave it sitting there while I get ready for work (I think it says for 30 minutes). You can actually see the residual urine soak up into the pad afterwards! They smell nice and fresh, not strong or overpowering, and don’t leave that 'wet carpet' smell like some other cleaners do. These are ideal for small stains (my main use for them is small dog urine spots, but I have also used them for cat vomit stains). They seem to work on old stains I’ve missed too. I have a beige carpet and they did not bleach it or discolor my carpets. I can’t recommend them enough!" —Evaa

    Price: $24.99 for 20 pads

    8. A durable chew toy for withstanding a play session with even the most vigorous chewer.

Promising review: "I bought this a year ago for my two young boxers but didn't really have much hope for its longevity due to the rope and my dog's love of chewing up rope toys. Much to my surprise the rope lasted until today! It stays outside in all kinds of weather in my sun-drenched backyard. I will be buying another one today, this is a great product!" —Jillybean

Price: $10.17+ (available in three sizes)

    9. Or a flavored Nylabone ring toy because its textured nubs will help loosen plaque and clean your dog's teeth while simultaneously giving them a creative outlet for their energy.

    The textured ring toy

Promising review: "I adopted an 8-month-old pittie who is an aggressive chewer. He LOVES this toy! It's heavy so I am not keen on him flailing around with it/dropping it near my feet, but it's held up great! We play fetch with it and he loves how it rolls and entertains himself with it. Despite how aggressive a chewer he is, this toy looks fantastic six weeks in. I keep an eye on it to reduce chances of ingesting pieces but it holds up really well. The only downside is the color. It's his outside toy and it can be difficult to find in the grass sometimes. Even so, I bought a second one to have on hand. And for less that $6, it's perfect!" —AlleyCaaat

    Price: $5.99

    10. A pet hair remover if you love your fur baby but hate how much they shed...on everything. Roll it over your couch, bed, favorite blanket, you name it, and watch it lift the fur away. See, we can own nice things!!

    Krystal / Chewy

Promising review: "I bought a Dyson vac last time specifically for the animal hair attachment. This thing does a better job. No offense to the Dyson, but the ChomChom is just lighter weight and more manageable, and has a wider head to cover more surface. It also gets into the squishy parts better, surprisingly." —WillowCrone

    Price: $24.95

    11. A snout soother so your pup's snoot stays soft, moisturized, and oh-so boopable.

    Pepper / Chewy

Promising review: "Pepper is 11 and we noticed that as he's getting older his nose is getting dryer. It got pretty dry and started to crust up, so I knew I had to get something. I bought this stuff and started putting it on his nose. I love that all the ingredients are natural. Pepper doesn't like when I put it on his nose and the first few days he rubbed it off, but I found that if you put it on and then give the dog a treat it helps. But yes I would recommend this stuff; his nose is wet and his sense of smell seems better! Included before and after photos!" —Brittany

    Price: $4.95

    12. A stimulating activity mat that'll keep your doggos entertained and challenged, especially if you hide treats and kibble in it.

Promising review: "My 3-month-old doodle was not super interested in her kibble and I was having to really work to get her to eat. At least part of it seemed like the whole process was very boring to her. The snuffle mat has been absolutely clutch for getting her to eat while providing great mental stimulation! I just drop her kibble on it and she roots and snuffles away." —SarahSmiles

    Price: $39.95

    13. An ear treatment to clean your poor pet's ears of buildup and prevent inflammation and irritation. These ear drops are designed to protect against a variety of fungal and bacterial infections, like yeast and staph infections.

    Kass / Chewy

Promising review: "Our dog had a nasty yeast infection in his ear. Took about five days to clear it up. It seemed to soothe the itch too! Will buy again if one of my dogs gets another ear infection. Before and after photos are above!" —Kass

    Price: $21.99

    14. A liquid tartar remover for dogs who desperately need their teeth cleaned but who also won't let you near them with a toothbrush. (Think of it as doggy mouthwash!) Just add this to their water and you'll notice your dog's plaque and bad breath subside.

Side by side of the container and dog drinking bowl of water in which the remover has been added

Promising review: "We're almost done with our first bottle (lasted months) and our dog's teeth look incredible. The vet and groomer always comment on how clean they are! I was a bit concerned about the mint smell, but I did taste to check it and it's completely flavorless. My dog was hesitant at first (not sure if it's the smell or bubbles) but he doesn't notice at all now." —Spring

Price: $5.49+ (available in two sizes)

    15. A dog DNA kit because haven't you always wanted to know exactly what kind of dog your beloved rescue mutt is?

Diagram showing breakdown of dog'd genetic makeup

Promising review: "Embark has such a large breed database, which is why we picked this test. Also, it was super easy and not painful in any way to get the sample from our Buster Boy. We were surprised by some of the breeds in him, and not with others, but could see traits from each breed mentioned once we knew. Be sure to read the directions before taking a sample. The site is fun for *relative* matches though it's hard to say if anyone is active with that part of it." —BusterBBB

    Price: $199

    16. An eye rinse if you need help getting rid of tear stains — aka those annoying reddish streaks some dogs have around their eyes.

    The bottle

Promising review: "My pup had eye discharge constantly of undetermined etiology. Applied these for three days and the problem disappeared. It was either allergies or something got in his eyes at the dog park, but this solved the problem quickly. Happy dog!" —Beth

    Price: $4.32

    17. A slow feeder bowl so you can stop your dog from inhaling their meal in a minute flat. These ridged bowls can help improve digestion, reduce bloating, and encourage your dog's foraging skills to keep their mind active.

Promising review: "For the past few years, I have gotten to know my dog as one to eat quite quickly. Shaking her bowl and the sound of it being filled up makes her really excited, and she kind of attacks the food when I give it to her. Not in a bad way, of course, just trying to eat as fast as possible. However, I’ve noticed that in doing so, she always got very gassy, bloated, had hiccups, and burped A LOT. So, I thought it was time to try one of these bowls out! At first, she was skeptical but after some training and positive reinforcement, she has no problem eating out of this bowl! I have definitely seen a change in her eating habits by eating slower and taking her time. She has less bloat and doesn’t burp in my face as much after a meal haha!" —Nina

Price: $10.18+ (available in two sizes)

    18. An anti-fungal antibacterial spray made with cooling aloe that'll treat a range of skin conditions, including allergies, cuts, hot spots, infections, rashes, and scrapes.

    Louis / Chewy

Promising review: "It begins working immediately. My rottie and one of my cats have both gotten mange on their backside and in both cases this product worked. The first week the mange stopped spreading. The second week we noticed new hair growth. With a month they were cured. Don’t let your pet suffer. Use this product. It works. I’m sooooooooo happy that I found it. These are two pictures of the dog. First one shows him after a few weeks and second shows him completely cured after two months." —Louis

    Price: $8.96

Promising review: "My family has raised three puppies, and I just got my first puppy of my own. Normally we just let them cry it out at night until they can sleep though it, but I live in an apartment, so for the first week I was waking up every two hours at least to let her out. I was lucky if she went back to sleep. I tried using a sock full of rice to give her something warm, but it only stayed warm for about 30 minutes, so she always woke up ready to scream until I grabbed her. Last night she slept for eight hours straight with this toy. She absolutely loves it, she cries for about 30 seconds in her crate before snuggling up with it and going back to sleep. WELL worth the money. I wish I has bought it earlier." —Hailey

Price: $39.95 (available in four colors)

    20. A hair-removing glove for curbing your dog's shedding as well as satisfying his endless desire for some rubbies. It's great if your dog or cat goes running at the sight of a brush.

The grooming glove with silicone nodules, full of hair held in front of a French bulldog
    AnaMaria Glavan / BuzzFeed

My colleague AnaMaria Glavan has a very similar version and swears by this thing. In her own words:

"The glove is super comfortable and using it couldn’t be more foolproof: just put it on and run your hands through your pet’s fur. That’s it! The silicone grooves pick up so much fur with ease. Like, my dog looks close to hairless. HOW is he shedding so much!?!? After a few runs, I found that I would have to remove fur from the glove before continuing (you can pick up the fur with your other hand or run the glove under some water — either works) but it’s no biggie. The silicone actually makes it really easy to keep this clean. We got Rockie when he was 5 and he’d been riddled with skin issues and allergies, so I was pretty nervous to use anything that could potentially aggravate his conditions. However! Not only does this *not* bother his skin, but he…loves this. A lot. He starts snoring after exactly two run-throughs on his back. Also, his coat looks SO shiny after each use! TL;DR: this is one of those inexpensive add-ons that any pet owner should have on hand."

    Price: $9.99

    21. A hammock car seat cover to protect your backseat from slobber, fur, wet paw prints, and mud after a trip to the dog park.

Dog sitting on the seat cover

Promising review: "This is the best purchase I've made since being a dog owner. It is so easy to clean and I know my seats are protected. If my pup is muddy I do not have to worry about laying down towels or anything to prevent my seats from being stained. It also doesn't collect the hair like a cloth covering would, so I can take it out, shake it off, and the hair is almost all gone. I would definitely buy this again and again." —Finley

Price: $46+ (available in two sizes and three colors)

    22. A nail grinder if you want your wood floors and furniture to remain free of scratch marks. It'll trim your pup's claws to an acceptable length so they don't leave behind gouges in your beautiful oak flooring. Plus it's super quiet and smooth, which is ideal for dogs who get spooked by regular nail clippers.

Model using the grinder on a puppy's nails

Promising review: "I was having a really hard time holding my uncooperative dog down while trying to use traditional dog clippers. I bought this with some skepticism, but I have to say I am blown away. My dog still doesn't love it but it's much easier for both of us to do and her nails look like they do when I pay to get them trimmed (which costs slightly less than this grinder did). It is as quiet as I imagine it can be and works really well. Easy to hold, too. Would recommend!" —Dana
