13 TV Plot Holes And Continuity Errors, Plus Their Possible (And, In Some Cases, Actual) Explanations

What's worse, being dragged to the Upside Down or realizing no one remembered your birthday?

Warning: Some spoilers ahead, especially for Stranger Things season 4

    1. In Season 2 of Stranger Things, Joyce tries to reach a possessed Will by reminding him of the significance of March 22: It's his birthday.

Two seasons later, Will and El are living in California when Mike comes to visit for spring break. When they decide to hang out at a roller rink, El gets tormented by some school bullies. One particularly evil teen films the whole ordeal. On the recording, the date reads "March 22." And yet, no one takes the time to wish poor Will a happy birthday or offer him a Demogorgon-themed cake (okay, that might be a little insensitive, considering). Everyone politely ignoring his birthday is made even sadder by the fact that Will spends the day feeling like a third wheel to El and Mike.

In an interview with Variety, the Duffer Brothers came clean about the mix-up. Matt Duffer said, "The honest response is, clearly like the characters in the show, we also forgot about Will’s birthday. So the debate now is whether we adjust Will’s birthday or we just let it be really sad."

Personally, I'd like to vote for changing his birthday, because between the Upside Down, the third wheeling, and the bowl cut, this kid needs a break.

    2. Another inconsistency viewers noticed in the new crop of Stranger Things episodes was the fact that the young El in flashbacks seemed far more verbal than the El we met all the way back in Season One.

In the same interview with Variety, the Duffer Brothers explained that this wasn't a case of forgotten characterization. Matt Duffer said that following One's rampage, "She lives alone, in an isolated room. This is the Eleven that we meet in Season 1. Two years in isolation and really limited memories of what had happened to her. And so that’s one reason for the speech." Apparently, the show explores this more in the final two episodes of the season.

    3. During the fourth season of Riverdale, Veronica is accepted to Harvard's class of 2024. This would indicate that she's graduating from high school as part of the Class of 2020. But in Season 5, following a seven-year time jump, Veronica says that it's currently 2021.

In Season 4 Veronica is on the phone getting her acceptance news and in Season 5 Veronica is saying it's 2021 while holding a wine glass

    4. Riverdale's Cheryl and Jason Blossom are twins, while Polly is Betty's older sister. However, Jason and Polly are in the same grade, even though he should be in the same grade as Betty and Cheryl, since he is Cheryl's exact age.

    5. In the first episode of Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Terry gives the newly instated Captain Holt quick summaries of all the detectives on the squad. Everyone included in this monologue goes on to be a major character, except for Scully and Hitchcock's partner-in-mediocrity, Detective Daniels. She's never heard of again.

    6. Prior to the beginning of the Battle of the Blackwater in Season 2 of Game of Thrones, the bells of King's Landing start ringing. When it's suggested that this means the residents are welcoming their conquest, Davos says that he's "never known bells to mean surrender."

Six seasons later, in an episode titled "The Bells," Daenerys's army is about to attack King's Landing. Tyrion insists that if they hear the bells of the city ringing, that means its people have surrendered. Davos is standing right there at the time and doesn't object to this, and later on in the episode, it's shown that the bells do indicate surrender (though Daenerys isn't particularly inclined to accept their offer).

    7. While we're on the subject of King's Landing, quite a few fans noticed that the city seemed to be copy-and-pasted onto an entirely new terrain in between seasons. While in earlier seasons it was a seaside paradise surrounded by greenery...

    8. In the Season 6 premiere of Game of Thrones, Melisandre removed her necklace and revealed that her youthful appearance was nothing more than a trick, and that she was in fact an elderly woman. The removal of the necklace immediately prior to this transformation heavily implies that it is what's keeping her youthful...

...but in Season 4, a young Melisandre is seen in a bathtub without her necklace. So how is she able to keep up the facade?

    9. In The Good Place, Chidi speaks English with an American accent, which he explains in the first episode is due to the mystical properties of the afterlife: He speaks using the language with which he's most comfortable, which in his case is French, and other people hear it as the language with which they're most comfortable.

But when the cast returns to Earth, Eleanor watches a lecture where Chidi speaks American-accented English, which doesn't make much sense outside the context of the afterlife.

Creator Mike Schur explained this choice in an interview with Rolling Stone. He said that while Chidi speaking French with subtitles was a possibility they discussed, they decided against it, since "comedy requires timing and pace and rhythm, and subtitles are bad for that."

    close up of Chidi

William Jackson Harper, who played Chidi, used a "pan-African accented English" during a read-through of the lecture Eleanor watches, which Schur described as "wonderful" in a "'Meryl Streep doing a dialect' kind of way." But since Chidi had previously used an American accent in flashbacks, and Harper and Kristen Bell (Eleanor) had "such a specific chemistry and rhythm" that no one wanted to risk by throwing a new language into the mix, it was decided that Chidi would speak with an American accent.

However, Schur described himself and the rest of the creative team as "continuity/backstory nerds," and sure enough, Chidi's status as a polyglot was explained in the third season's premiere.

    10. In the Friends episode, "The One with the Cheap Wedding Dress," Monica tries on a wedding dress that she adores but is out of her price point.

    11. Johnny Galecki starred as the sweet, sensitive David Healy on Roseanne, but during his first appearance in Season 4, he introduced himself as Kevin, not David.

The show referenced this error in a Season 6 episode, when Roseanne says that Darlene made up David's name to make a point of how much influence she has over him in their relationship.

    12. In Hannah Montana, Miley Stewart lives a secret double life as the pop star Hannah Montana. Her efforts to keep her alter ego a secret is at the core of the show, but a few times throughout the series, people recognize Miley's famous father, Robby Ray, who is also Hannah's dad. So...if they have the same dad, and everyone knows who he is, why does no one connect the dots between Miley and Hannah?

    13. And finally: During the opening credits of Sex and the City, when Carrie sees the ad for her column on the bus, the bus is full of passengers.

But a few seconds later, it's completely empty.
