In 2004, then-leader of the house Tony Abbott launched into an attack on the Labor opposition leader Mark Latham, tearing strips off him by comparing him to the future US president Donald Trump.

Some context: Tony Abbott was zeroing in on Mark Latham over Labor's Centenary House, which had been controversially leased to the Commonwealth in the 1990s with rent going up 9% every year.

The clip shows Tony Abbott calling Mark Latham the "biggest property shark since Donald Trump" over the deal.

Abbott concludes his rant by suggesting that if Mark Latham doesn't pay back the rent, "the Australian people can conclude he's an even bigger spiv than Donald Trump".

A "spiv" is an old-timey word for someone who conducts dodgy business dealings or, from Urban Dictionary, "The kind of guy who wears a shiny medallion, goes bankrupt from a dodgy swampland development scheme, but still has a big house in his wife's name".

Abbott's "spiv" comment was later deemed unparliamentary and he withdrew it.

It sits in stark contrast to Abbott's comments on Friday morning, praising Donald Trump for speaking up for conservative middle class voters.

And Latham, well Latham went on to lose the 2004 election, retire from politics, become a columnist, resign in disgrace for harassing women online and then become a Donald Trump supporter.
