Here's Why This Pre-Budget Photo Is So Important

Behind the curtain of the budget circus.

Prime minister Malcolm Turnbull and treasurer Scott Morrison have taken their pre-budget happy snap and considering the high stakes, it's an incredibly important photo.

There's a lot going on. First of all notice they aren't wearing suit jackets. This is supposed to signal to everyone that they've been ~working hard~.

Secondly, there's the lazily scattered budget graphs on the table in front of the camera. These can't be too important - hell, they don't want to give the game away. But the intention is to make it look like they've been doing hard maths.

Also, BANTER. There have been some toxic PM-treasurer relationships in recent times and there are rumors that Malcolm Turnbull and Scott Morrison don't really get along. For this shot they're locked eye-to-eye and Morrison is taking his direction from some very innovative hand expressions.

Finally... that red teapot. Turnbull's media staffers want Australia to think, "ooooooo, so calm, so wise." Malcolm drinks green tea ("so zen") and so the red teapot makes it into the shot.

All in all it's a pretty great photo tbh.

These photos can be disastrous. Last year, then-prime minister Tony Abbott and his treasurer Joe Hockey took this gloomy picture.

Tony Abbott looked like he was trying to hold Joe Hockey back from a cliff.

Sad treasurer is sad.

It can also really open a window into the PM-treasurer relationship. Julia Gillard liked her treasurer Wayne Swan and it showed back in 2012.

They could actually sit in the same room without killing each other.

It was in stark contrast to Swan and his former boss Kevin Rudd in 2009. This is icy AF.

The former best mates had started turning on each other, with widespread reports that Rudd was micro-managing the budget process.

It really does appear that Turnbull and Morrison nailed it this year.

And they better! This is one of the most important budgets in political memory as it comes just weeks before a double dissolution election.

With both men doing this for the first time. So sip that tea Mr Morrison.
