8 Musical Guests You Forgot Were On Degrassi

Before Drake was Drake, your favorite Canadians were hanging with some of pop's biggest names. Here are some of the best musician cameos you've probably forgotten.

1. Taking Back Sunday

In Season 6, Taking Back Sunday guest-starred as themselves, playing a show shortly after being interviewed by Ellie Nash for "The Core." The episode is about the woes of cocaine — Craig Manning, who performs with the band, stops mid-through the set because his nose beings to bleed, making everyone aware of his cocaine problem. The band perform their 2006 single "MakeDamnSure" live and recite something like ten lines total.

They were also in a Degrassi short, "Adam Lazzara from Taking Back Sunday Married My Mom." It's pretty much three minutes of "isn't this cute band cute?" Yes, they are cute.

3. ... and Cassadee Pope

Fall Out Boys' Pete Wentz and Hey Monday lead singer/The Voice season three winner Cassadee Pope guest starred in Paradise City: Degrassi Goes Hollywood, which has possibly the strangest (and not totally well thought out?) plot of the show to date. The musicians tell Ellie Nash that they cannot tour without Craig Manning because he introduce them to ketchup chips and cannot tour without him. Because ketchup chips are hard to find. Why?

4. KeKe Palmer

In the season 11 premiere, "Spring Fever," singer/songwriter Keke Palmer plays herself... and Sav's new long interest. Basically he doesn't recognize her, they do some cute things. Literally everything every teenager has ever wanted, in one episode. Canada is Heaven.

5. Natasha Bedingfield

In the series finale of season seven, Natasha Bedingfield plays herself, and performs at the Degrassi prom after Liberty Van Zandt learns her essay won a radio contest. She plays her two biggest hits, "Pocketful of Sunshine" and "Unwritten." Again, if this is a teen comedy, why are their lives so perfect (minus the drug issues and whatever.)

6. Billy Ray Cyrus

Billy Ray Cyrus is one of the few guest musicians to portray someone other than themselves. In "The Power of Love," the achy breaky star is Duke, the limo driver Jimmy Brooks hires to take him and his friends to a Bollywood themed dance. Duke is later arrested for not paying parking tickets. Some writer on this show must really not like Hannah Montana.

7. Hedley

Just last year, the hour long special Degrassi: Las Vegas ran, featuring a guest spot from Canadian band Hedley. Apparently they are a pop-punk band signed to a bunch of different major labels, but if you don't listen to Canadian Top 40 or watch Canadian Idol (apparently the singer was a finalist? Third Place?) you've probably never heard of them.

8. Alanis Morissette (Twice!)

Alanis Morissette (aka the Queen of Canada) makes not one, but two appearances on the quintessential show about growing up, in both season four and five, originally slotted for the three-part season finale. She portrays a principal, parodying Canadian tropes, that, at times, are more uncomfortable than funny. Gotta see it to believe it!
