12 Things That Have The Wrong Damn Name

Misnomers all around.

1. Fireflies

Although they fly, fireflies aren't flies, but beetles. I suppose "firebeetles" just never caught on. Personally I would have named them "magical glowing orb babies."

2. Strawberries

Strawberries are not berries. (Neither are raspberries or blackberries!) They're actually "accessory fruits." A berry is only a true berry when it is produced by a single ovary, which the strawberry is not. Meanwhile, bananas are berries! Everything is crazy, please send help.

3. Koala Bears

Koalas are not bears. Koalas are marsupials. The name for this animal is incorrect. Needless to say, it doesn't matter I would still hug one 12/10.

4. Boston Cream Pie

From the image above you can clearly see Boston cream pie is made of cake. While it's not totally clear why this is, some people have investigated more deeply. I for one am happy to just look at it for evidence that it's a cake...and then eat it.

5. Driveways

Driveways are where you park. Unlike a "parkway" where you drive...?! This is a good one to remember on a driving exam.

6. Jellyfish

Jellyfish aren't fish, they're actually cnidarians. Although it may be more accurate to call them "mysterious blobby floaty things."

7. Peanuts

While peanuts may seem like the quintessential nut, they are actually not nuts at all. They are legumes. THEY SHOULD BE CALLED "PEAGUMES"

8. Tin foil

Often referred to as "tin foil" because it was once actually made of tin in the early 20th century, "tin foil" these days is only made of aluminum.

9. Guinea Pigs

This guinea pig looks like she just found out she's not actually a pig, but a rodent. Doesn't matter what you call these little furballs, they're still the cutest.

10. White Chocolate

White chocolate actually doesn't contain any cocoa solids, which is what qualifies chocolate as, well, chocolate. It's made primarily from cocoa butter. Call it whatever you want I still want to dip strawberries in it.

11. Starfish (Sea Stars)

A starfish, unlike its commonly used name is not a fish at all but an echinoderm. Not really sure how they got their name as they look nothing like a fish... Another mystery of the universe UNSOLVED.

12. Cheesecake

While this a highly debated topic, I personally feel that cheesecake is a pie, and should be called "cheesepie." It's a crust with a filling, which is not a cake but a pie. It's time for the cheesepie revolution we've all been waiting for.
