The Weeknd Explained Why It Was "Terrifying" To Lose His Voice And Forget How To Sing While Making "The Idol"

"I’ve performed with the flu. I’ll die on that stage. But there was something very complicated going on with my mind at that moment.”

HBO's The Idol is already one of the most talked-about TV shows of the year — and it hasn't even aired yet.

The latest TV drama from Euphoria creator Sam Levinson premieres on June 4.

You already know that Abel Tesfaye — aka The Weeknd — is one of the show's main stars, playing self-help guru Tedros.

You might also remember that Abel lost his voice mid-performance while on tour last fall and had to cancel the show as a result.

In a recent interview with W Magazine, Abel revealed that he believes he lost his voice — as well as forgot how to sing entirely — because of his work on The Idol.

“I had to take off the Weeknd outfit, put on Tedros’s wig, shoot with [The Idol costar Lily-Rose Depp], then go back to being The Weeknd,” he said.

“It was tough to go from one head to another. Then, after the concert, I lost my voice. No voice came out at all."

    "That’s never happened before.”

Abel also provided his "theory" for why he thinks this happened. "I was playing Tedros, a character who doesn’t know how to sing,” he said.

“I may be looking too deeply into this, but it was terrifying," he stated, before saying that he'd previously never canceled a show before the night that he lost his voice.
