Which Songs Resonated Most With You On Kendrick Lamar's New Album, "Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers"

The Compton rapper has returned for his 5th studio album.

After a five-year hiatus, the Compton rapper has returned with his new album, Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers.

Throughout the album, he gives insight into his family life, spirituality, and his social observations during his departure. He mixes melodic and classic instrumentation with transparent content, making this his most vulnerable album to date.

Standout tracks: "Rich Spirit", "Count Me Out", "Savior", "Silent Hill", and "Father Time."

Not only does Kendrick reveal the joys of fatherhood, but he tackles the trauma that was projected onto him from his father in the song "Father Time." This is a common theme in the album, giving the duality of Black family issues. 

Tracks such as "Rich Spirit," give the West Coast feel mixed with thought-provoking lyrical content. Standout tracks like "Count Me Out" sound like a victory chant, while "Savior" touches your consciousness and discusses the highs and lows of his celebrity.

The album sounds like a stage play, as the lyrical content reveals personal thoughts and the sound is a mixture of instruments and voice inflections on another level.  One thing we can assure from this album is that he hasn't lost his lyrical ability. In fact, he's reached a mastery level of rapping. His love for his partner, observational eye, creative spirit, and vulnerability are evident.

It's clear during his hiatus, he wrestled internally to find solid ground in his spiritual journey. He describes his belief in God as transformative. Kendrick also shows a disappointment toward certain cultural values that don't align with his morals, yet instead of shunning he gives enlightenment, understanding, and grace to those that are misled. Throughout the album, you get the feeling he is breaking free from shackles that had previously hindered him. Kendrick chooses to use his art as therapy and an expression of self that we can all appreciate.
