We Tried 1950s Beauty Trends And Here's What Worked

"I feel like I just put lip gloss all over my face."

We do a lot of wacky stuff to our faces in the name of beauty, and the women of Ladylike were wondering: would we have a better beauty experience if we just went back to basics? So we decided to try out some skin care tips from the 1950s:

First, we used cold cream to remove our makeup, for which we had very mixed results.

Chantel SWEARS by cold cream for makeup removal, while Kristin pointed out that even after using the cold cream, there was A LOT of foundation left on our makeup wipes. So, was it moisturizing? Yes. But it was no match against liquid foundations + setting spray.

Next, we tried steaming our faces over a basin of hot water (to open our pores), a technique supposedly used by Audrey Hepburn.

Everybody thought this was super refreshing, but definitely too intense to do more than once a week. Devin and Kristin were much redder for a second afterwards, but that faded.

Then we tried Marilyn Monroe's technique of plunging our faces in hot water, which was intense but effective.

Then, we washed our faces with Erno Laszlo bar soap, which is $45(!!!).

After we applied to soap to our faces, we had to splash our faces with water 20 TIMES. Yes, it really said this in the instructions.

Finally, we moisturized with Elizabeth Arden's 8 hour cream, which was another favorite of Marilyn Monroe's, and woooow it was EXTRA EXTRA moisturizing.

Overall, we loved the cheapest stuff!
