Velma Is Officially A Lesbian In A New “Scooby-Doo” Film, Following Years Of Filmmakers Trying To Put Her Sexuality On Screen

Scooby-Doo fans are ecstatic that Velma is finally being outright portrayed as a lesbian: "I never thought I'd live to see the day when Velma is very clearly having gay thoughts on-screen."

You know Velma Dinkley: beloved Scooby-Doo character, elite private investigator, and lesbian icon.

After years of fan speculation, the latest Scooby-Doo film — Trick or Treat Scooby-Doo! (released digitally on Oct. 4) — finally makes Velma's sexuality canon.

In 2020, Scooby-Doo! Mystery Incorporated supervising producer Tony Cervone confirmed in the comments of an Instagram post that Velma is gay: "I've said this before, but Velma in Mystery Incorporated is not bi. She's gay. We always planned on Velma acting a little off and out of character while she was dating Shaggy, because that relationship was wrong for her and she had unspoken difficulty with the why."

James Gunn, who wrote the script for the live-action 2002 Scooby-Doo movie, also stated in a 2020 tweet: "In 2001, Velma was explicitly gay in my initial script. But the studio just kept watering it down and watering it down, becoming ambiguous (the version shot), then nothing (the released version), and finally having a boyfriend (the sequel)."
