This is completely different from Piss Christ, because Piss Christ has a multiplicty in potential meanings that are left for the beholder of the piece to discern. It’s less about “free speech” and more about leaving an open loop for interpretation. Does Piss Christ comment on what Christians do with the Jesus message? Does the ethereal glow that comes from lighting and the urine speak to how holy something profane can look? Is the piece simply profane? It all depends on how you look at it. If someone can tell me what GB means by trying to sell a jar full of pee with an Obama figurine in it other than saying “Obama deserves to be profaned,” or “This icon the left worships is a religious figure, let’s profane it like they profaned Christ,” then well … Beck’s making a much more profound statement than I realize.
