The theme of the gala and the Costume Institute show is "Rei Kawakubo/Comme des Garçons: Art Of The In-Between" and Rihanna's dress is from the Comme des Garçons Fall 2016 collection.

As you can probs tell, Comme des Garçons is known for sculptural, architectural, post-structural garments that can be ~difficult~ to wear.
