Aussies Are Sharing What They Envy Most About Americans And Wow, These Are Fascinating

Okay but seriously, American thrift shops are incredible.

I'll be the first to admit it: Australians enjoy taking the piss out of Americans.

But that doesn't mean that there aren't elements of US culture that Aussies admire, covet and envy.

So I asked the good people of Australia to share with me: What is one thing about the USA that you wish we would adopt in Oz?

    1. "The shopping! Their sales are actually decent. Starting at like 70% off, then additional savings on that. We don’t get that in Australia. I buy a lot of stuff on sale on the US sites and have it shipped over — it still works out cheaper than buying it here."

    2. "Having toothpaste in flavours other than mint. While things like bacon toothpaste gross me out, as someone who hates the taste of mint, I'd kill for some cinnamon or fruit-flavoured toothpaste over here!"

    —Facebook / Hayley Duncan

    3. "24/7 shopping centres."

    —Facebook / Liz Zard

    4. "BBQ restaurants, with all sorts of smoked meats. Not really much of a thing over here. Also, because music gear is made in the USA — guitars, drums, everything — it's so much cheaper over there."

    —Facebook / Jonathan Rademaker

    5. "Actual clothes that fit. If I buy clothes here, I can be anywhere between three sizes — and even if I buy multiple items from the same brand, there's no guarantee that all three sets will fit. I can order the same size every time from the USA and it's guaranteed to fit every time."

    6. "Allowing pets into hotels, shops, apartments etc. Australia is very behind in this area. It would be great to take the dogs everywhere I go."

    —Facebook / Wanda White

    7. "Cheap domestic flights."

    —Facebook / Samantha Davey

    8. "Their fast food sizes and the access they have to so many brands — everything is catered to them!"

    —Facebook / Hayley Bow

    9. "Shake Shack, Target, decent bagels, Carvel, Dairy Queen."

    —Facebook / Fiorella Trapuzzano

    10. "The food mostly for me! Blue cheese dip and sauce, Denny’s, In-N-Out Burger, Walmart, the prices of cigarettes and alcohol."

    —Facebook / Ange Gilpin

    11. "Thrift shops."

    —Facebook / Ellen Turner

    12. "Probably the school culture, like many proms and the graduation at high schools. In Australia, we don't have the hats, robes or anything like that."

    —Facebook / Phoebe Redington

    13. "I'm jealous they have Disneyland/World. I really want to go to those parks again, but I can’t without booking a plane ticket all the way to America, booking a hotel, buying tickets and buying overpriced merch (yeah, it's a problem)."

    —Facebook / Maddy Bach

    14. "Family-style dining restaurants. We have nothing here."

    —Facebook / Jaimie Davis

    15. "The ease and accessibility of craft and hobby materials! It’s absolutely crazy that I can walk into Hobby Lobby and buy everything I need to take up glass art, or resin, or build a bloody dollhouse! We need that back home. Also, not gonna lie, their Goodwills are a thousand times better than any op shop we have back in Australia."

    —Facebook / Rachael Bott

    16. "Splitting the bill at restaurants is more common and normal in North America than in Australia. Back home, you generally either pay just one bill or everyone pays individually at the till."

    —Facebook / Sarah Haynes

    17. "The sales! I was there for Veteran's Day weekend and Black Friday a few years back and their sales shit ALL over our Boxing Day sale. It is always a minimum of 60% off at almost all retailers and that’s including the outlets that are already cheap."

    —Facebook / Loz Blake

    18. "Alcohol. Sold. EVERYWHERE. Although their conservative states can keep their 'no alcohol sales on Sunday' bullshit. I THOUGHT THIS WAS THE LAND OF THE FREE?!"

    —Facebook / Afie Jazreen

    19. "Just how huge it is in terms of people/states/counties. I don’t necessarily wish we had that in Australia, but I am super intrigued by the sheer size and hustle and bustle of America."

    —Facebook / Imogen Thompson

    20. "Proper peanut butter and jelly in the jar. Our parent's friends over there used to send us some as kids."

    —Facebook / Aaron Lang

    21. "I am jealous they have Starbucks drive-thrus and lots of flavours. I’m also jealous of it snowing places at Christmas."

    —Facebook / Evelyn Johns

    22. "Price of ciggies and also how easy it is to get a sugar daddy in America compared to Australia."

    —Facebook / Ella Boyle

    23. "I want Shake Shack for the custard thick shakes."

    —Facebook / Bridgie Bee

    24. "Lowkey Halloween. I know it’s not an Australian holiday, but I’d just like to visit the US for Halloween at least once — it looks so fun."

    —Facebook / Madison White

    25. "I’m from the US and I really miss Chick-fil-A! I hope to see it in Australia soon."

    —Facebook / Taylor Pisani

    26. "The sporting matches are heaps better — I went to ice hockey, basketball and baseball in different states and in all cases, they gave away free gifts at the start of the game, the half time entertainment was wild and they had t-shirt canons/gift cards parachuting from the ceiling."

    —Facebook / Jessica Katherine

    27. "I would kill for Trader Joe's to launch here."

    —Facebook / Melissa Bryan

    28. "American food portions (specifically for drinks and fries) because sometimes I just want more drinks or fries than I do nuggets or burgers. And definitely an American-style diner. Oh and their Dairy Queens."

    —Facebook / Cloe Mula

    29. And finally, "HOUSE PRICES."
