I was browsing Reddit the other day when I came across this photo of someone who'd put Skittles in their glass of wine. Notice anything??
The S's detach from the Skittle and float!
Is this really a Thing? And why? I had to find out.
After putting on a lab coat and goggles — safety first — I found some Skittles and threw them in a bowl of water. The dyes immediately started leaching out from the Skittles like fibs from the mouth of a Republican presidential candidate!
It looked pretty gross, I'm not going to lie. I offered someone $5 to drink the bowl and they strongly declined.
After a few minutes, most of the dye had seeped off the Skittles, and pieces of the candy shell were starting to float disgustingly to the top.
Then, the S's started to float off!
It worked!
Whoaaaa.
There's a Real Science for why this happens: the letters on the Skittles are printed with a non-water soluble ink. The letters are attached to the candies with an edible glue that dissolves in water, rendering the floating S's.
