12 Reactions You Get When You Tell People You’re German

If you're German and you spent some time abroad (Mallorca doesn't count), you'll have encountered most or all of these reactions at some point. So hold on to your Lederhosen and get ready for some stereotypes!

    1.

People start talking about how organized and punctual Germans are. You just nod and smile, while you try to hide the fact that you come late to every appointment, your desk is a mess and you haven't worn a matching pair of socks in six years.

    2.

At some point you were asked if Hitler is still in power.

    3.

People like to imitate a German accent that sounds as if a military general with a spitting problem is having a fit of rage.

    4.

Everybody assumes you love beer and tries to serve it to you. You go along with it even if you hate beer, because you don't want to fail your mother country.

    5.

People tell you their favourite German beer is Heineken. Should you mention that Heineken is Dutch?

    6.

You get asked a lot where you left your Lederhosen. You wonder if you should start making a Power Point presentation about how Bavaria's culture is different from the rest of Germany.

    7.

Everybody is surprised when you're not blond, tall and blue eyed.

    8.

You patiently wait while the person you're talking to starts listing all the German soccer players and teams they have ever heard of in their entire life.

    9.

    7:1. Never forget.

    10.

You listen to a lot of "Ich liebe dich" and "Mein Name ist" and "Guten Tag" as people scramble for the phrases of German they learnt at some point.

    11.

If you got a dollar for every time that the words "Oktoberfest" or "Merkel" are mentioned, you'd have enough money to buy all the sauerkraut, sausages and towels you want.

    12.

You don't even blink an eye when someone starts screaming "Du! DU HAST! DU HAST MICH!!!" at you. However, you do wonder how Rammstein of all groups got to be so popular abroad.
